The family of a man who was accidentally buried alive by construction workers received a measly amount of compensation in wake of his horrific death.

Latori Barman, 45, suffered quite the traumatic death back in September 2015 after drunkenly stumbling into a pothole in Madhya Pradesh, India.

According to authorities, the farm labourer was walking home after having a few drinks one Friday night when he fell into the hole, which was in the middle of the road.

Katni district’s police chief, Gourav Rajput, told CNN at the time: “It was pitch dark. He didn’t see that crater.”

Barman had attended a village fair with his wife on the evening in question, but she eventually left to head to her parent‘s home.

He stayed out and stopped off at a liquor store somewhere along the way, before accidentally slipping into the hole.

Barman’s unfortunate fate was then sealed – literally – later that night by construction workers, who returned to the street to carry out repairs.

The crew seemingly didn’t notice the man lying in the hole and filled it in, burying the 45-year-old alive under a mountain of gravel and asphalt.

The crater was then levelled off with a roller, according to Rajput.

Barman tragically died from suffocation following the mammoth blunder, which was only realised the following day.

The 45-year-old’s wife had rallied neighbours to help her search for her husband after he did not return home.

Locals then noticed Barman’s arm sticking out of the recently resurfaced road, prompting officials to retrieve his remains.

Several construction workers were arrested in wake of the incident.

According to The Independent, the driver of a dumper truck and a labourer were both charged with negligence leading to death, before then being charged with culpable homicide.

An investigating officer said that the there were ‘no warning signs’ of the pothole when speaking to the Times of India in 2015.

“He would have been walking in an inebriated condition when he fell into the pit between Udlana and Hata villages and lost consciousness,” they said.

“Workers must not have noticed him while filling the pothole with bitumen.”

The local police chief revealed that Barman’s family were awarded 50,000 rupees in compensation – which is equivalent to just £432.

YouTuber Zack D Films produced a reconstruction of the tragedy earlier this week, leaving social media users seriously spooked.

As well as vowing to avoid being drunk on uneven roads like the plague from now on, a host of people paid tribute to Barman.

One person commented: “Sad story bro imagine it was someone’s dad

Another said: “I just woke up just to get traumatised.”

A third added: “Imagine the level of negligence it takes to fill up a hole with a living being inside, flatten it with a steamroller, and walk away like it’s just another random Tuesday. Disturbingly inhuman.”

And a fourth wrote: “No way they didn’t see a grown man in that pothole.”
