68-Year-Old Bar Owner Stuns Conan O’Brien with Unexpected Wit in Viral Subway Interview
Speaking to CBS News, she summed up the sudden change in her life: “One minute and 29 seconds changed my life.”
She also joked about how people’s reactions to her had changed.
“It used to be them pulling up saying, ‘Get out of the way, old lady,’” Shields said. “Now it’s, ‘I seen you on TV. We love you.’ I love you, too.”
Her bar reportedly drew a packed crowd after the clip gained attention, with supporters eager to meet her in person.
Customers also felt that her moment in the spotlight was well deserved. One visitor said, “This is well overdue. Mrs. Debbie deserves it.”
Shields explained that making people laugh had always been part of her personality, even when her sense of humor occasionally got her into awkward situations.
“Even at a funeral I’m laughing,” she told CBS News. “My girlfriends will say, ‘We can’t be seen with you anymore.’”
The viral encounter has also encouraged Shields to consider taking her humor to the stage
Shields already hosts weekly comedy nights at Confessions Bar, where she introduces the performers. However, she has not regularly performed stand-up herself.
“I do go onstage and introduce the comedians, but that’s my limit,” she told The New York Times.
She then admitted that she might give it a try.
“I just might do [start doing stand-up], because it sounds interesting.”
Shields said she loves making people laugh and believes people should enjoy life rather than take everything too seriously.
“I love to make people laugh. I love to have fun. I love to enjoy life, because life is beautiful. It’s what you make it.”
Shields has already found a way to bring her viral moment into her business.
She introduced a specialty cocktail called “The Baby Daddy O’Brien,” inspired by the joke about O’Brien being the father of her fictional children.
The pair may also have another chance to reunite. Shields told CBS News that O’Brien might visit Confessions Bar for karaoke.
“He says he can clear a room with his singing, so watch out,” she joked. “It should be very interesting.”
O’Brien’s visit has not been confirmed, but Shields is ready to welcome him if he shows up.
