The Simpsons has been running for almost 35 years now, but the series is still finding new ways to keep viewers on their toes.

Whether it be the newest season’s opening episode, which was a ‘finale’ episode, or the constant ongoing ability to predict current events, viewers watching are always kept guessing.

While the show featured an understandable and noticeable drop-off for years, according to some, interest is at an high for others as viewers are furiously trying to figure out what has been hinted in the promise that the newest episode will solve a 35-year mystery.

Al Jean has been the show runner for the last 22 years since season 13 of the show.

On 23 October, he posted on Twitter to say: “This Sunday a new The Simpsons will solve a mystery that has puzzled (me at least) since the beginning of the show…”

Accompanying this was a picture of two people who some fans are theorizing are Grandpa Simpson and Homer’s mother, Mona Simpson, as per Metro.

Meanwhile, one fan jokingly responded: “Who Shot Mr Burns. Finally.”

This was one of the biggest mysteries in The Simpsons history, with it finally being revealed to have been Maggie Simpson.

Another fan responded with a theory saying: “Is it just me or does that look like Agnes Skinner?”

Whilst this was a common theory, it’s one made less likely by Al Jean shooting down a fan asking: “Will we see a younger seymour skinner in this episode (baby/child/teen)??”

To which Jean simply responded saying: “No”.

However, another added to this theory by saying: “Abe is Skinner’s father? Calling it now”.

The synopsis for the episode, according to IMDb is: “An unearthed corpse opens up a cold case from Springfield in the 1980s.”

The first episode of the newest season, which was a ‘finale’ episode, was slated to be ‘the episode fans have waited for since 1989’.

Rather than being the final episode of the show as they had hinted, it ended up parodying various endings to TV shows such as The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and Succession.

It also saw an animated version of Conan O’Brien host what they claimed was ‘the final episode of The Simpsons’.

When discussing what he hopes for in the actual final ever episode of the show, Matt Selman, who is show runner alongside Al Jean, said to PEOPLE: “I just hope it’s just a regular episode with no Winky Winky stuff at all.

“Just a great family story, just like a classic story that’s just funny and involves the whole family and doesn’t feel like it needs to wrap up anything or change anything or tie anything up or be magic or talk to the audience directly.”
