A man who owns a Tesla Cybertruck has revealed how much it cost him to charge the electric car in one month.

Announced by Tesla owner Elon Musk back in November 2019, the Cybertruck was the company’s first electric pickup truck following on from the success of the Model S, Model X, Model S and Model Y.

The announcement came after Musk’s revelation that Tesla was creating the Tesla Semi; its first battery powered truck with a range of 500 miles (800 kilometres) per full charge.

Coming to the UK in summer last year, the Cybertruck was listed for sale at a staggering amount.

Features include ‘armour glass’; something that is said to be extremely strong and designed to ‘absorb impact force for unparalleled protection’. It can also reach 60mph in under three seconds, so is extremely nippy.

But is it efficient? And is it efficient enough to keep costs down in comparison to a petrol or diesel car?

Over on YouTube, creator Matt Wallace put this to the test in a video for his MattWallaceTech channel.

With loads of content about his Cybertruck in general, it is safe to say he knows a thing or two about the pros and cons of owning one of Musk’s vehicles.

The reality of owning any vehicle is never the same as what you’re advertised or think it will be like; and that can also be said for how much it costs you to run any car.

So, sure, it is costly to buy a Cybertruck – we’re talking up to £149,995 in the UK – but Matt’s findings left some fans wide-eyed at the cost of then running it.

To analyse the normal costs of running the vehicle, Matt monitored how much he spent charging his Cybertruck for 31 days.

“So how much have I spent in the past 31 days to charge my Tesla Cybertruck,” Matt said in the YouTube video.

“Well the answer may actually surprise you a bit.”

He said: “I know there’s a big stigma around EV’s [electric vehicle’s], especially some of the large ones, that they’re super expensive to charge and that they take forever. Well that’s not necessarily true.

“I got bored and decided to stop here at my local supercharger just to fill up and in the past 31 days I spent $32 on electricity.”

Crunching the numbers

For his $32, or £26, Matt got 334 kilowatt-hours (kWh).

The Cybertruck’s battery has a maximum capacity of 123 kWh, which translates to a maximum of 440 miles. A bit of LADbible maths means that Matt’s $32 got him a maximum of 1,194 miles of travel, depending on what model of Cybertruck he has.

For context, my petrol motor gets me a full tank of 550 miles for roughly £50. Pretty incredibly value, really.

One viewer commented: “1kWh will go about two miles on the Cybertruck at 634kWh used or driven. So he drove roughly 1,270 miles but id say about 1,000 miles; 32 bucks that’s pretty good.”
