Woman Uncovers Chilling Secrets Hidden Within Walls of Newly Bought Home—What She Found Will Haunt You
Buying a quirky home from the 1580s sounds like a dream until—bam!—you start chipping away at the walls and bones literally pop out at you. That’s exactly what happened to Emmie Brookman and her fiancé Norton Johnson, who thought they were just tackling some harmless pink mold and a splash of paint. Nope. Instead, their £300 DIY project turned into a spine-tingling excavation, revealing a mix of animal remains, a near human finger bone, and even a witchy bottle of ashes and herbs. Now, between finding out a notorious murderer lived next door and debating whether to frame any bones above the toilet (because, why not?), these two have a renovation story no one’s gonna top anytime soon. Ever wondered what secrets your walls might be harboring? Emmie and Norton sure got more than they bargained for. LEARN MORE
A woman was left particularly ‘creeped out’ after she made two horrifying discoveries at her new home.
Emmie Brookman had bought the three-bed place with her fiancé, Norton Johnson, in February 2023 and had begun a renovation project.
When they’d purchased the 1580s property for its ‘character and quirkiness’ they initially thought it just needed some ‘new carpets and paint’. However, when they found ‘pink mould growing on the wall’, they realised it was going to be a much bigger task.
They started the reno last August, spending just £300 on hand chiselling off the extender render themselves rather than following up on a £17,000 quote from professionals.
But when they started doing this, they uncovered some grim secrets hiding in the walls of their new home.

“We were taking the render off and when I was by the front something popped out of the wall,” the woman from Barrowford, Lancashire, explained.
“It was very obviously a bone. I was really creeped out. What do you do when you find a bone in the wall? We found about four more in the exterior. At first we thought we were going to find a full body.”
The couple then found another two bones inside with Emmie believing one to be a human finger bone and the rest from animals.

And this wasn’t the only creepy discovery, as they also learned that local murderer James Hargreaves lived in the manor house next door to them.
He was convicted of assaulting his housekeeper and then shot the young solicitors clerk in the back who had served the writ on him.
But the pair haven’t been put off by the dark history of their home.
As well as the bones, Emmie and Norton also found a green bottle filled up with ashes and herbs.
After some research, they found it was all down to the belief of witches in the history of magic in Kendal.

“They used to put bones in the walls and herbs to ward of the evil,” she said. “It’s what they believed was protecting them. We’ve found bones in near enough every room.
“One flew out at me and one I believe to be a finger.”
Saying the bones are ‘part of the house’, Emmie is now planning on putting some of them on display while returning some into the wall.
The couple are all done on the structural work, bones and all, and have just got two bedrooms and bathrooms left to decorate. Wonder if they’ll frame any of the bones to hang above the toilet…
