Meet the Bizarre Frog That Oinks Like a Pig—India’s Latest Amphibian Marvel Revealed!

Ever stumbled upon a creature so weird it makes you stop and wonder—not just about nature’s creativity but also about how the entire planet’s puzzle pieces came together? Meet Bhupathy’s purple frog, a subterranean oddity from India’s Western Ghats that’s proving to be more than just an underground weirdo. Named in honor of Dr. Subramaniam Bhupathy, who was as passionate about amphibians as he was unlucky in fate, this little guy spends most of its life vacuuming bugs with a flute-like tongue without ever seeing sunlight. But here’s the kicker: its very existence backs up the jaw-dropping theory of continental drift, linking India to distant lands like the Seychelles through ancient evolutionary ties. So, if you think frogs are just cute croakers, this one’s here to tell you evolution has a quirky sense of humor—and a geological story to tell. Ready to dive deeper and uncover the mysteries beneath the soil? LEARN MORE

The discovery also helps support the theory of continental drift.

Scientists have discovered a new species of frog in the Western Ghats mountain range in southwestern India. Spoiler alert: it won’t be winning any beauty contests.

The frog is being called Bhupathy’s purple frog after Dr. Subramaniam Bhupathy, who died in the Ghats in 2014 and who no doubt would be thrilled that this frog has been named in his honor. Bhupathy was after all a herpetologist — someone who studies amphibians.

According to National Geographic, The frog spends nearly its entire life underground, not even surfacing to eat. Instead, it uses its flute-like tongue to vacuum up insects in the ground.
