A lip reader has watched the controversial footage of French president Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte, and given their opinion on what was said between the two in the moments after she ‘slapped’ him.

Earlier this week, footage of Macron waiting to get off a plane went viral after it was spotted that his wife Brigitte looked to have ‘slapped him in the face’.

The fiery moment was captured as they landed in Hanoi, Vietnam, as both of Brigitte’s hands could be seen on the French president’s face before he was pushed away, seconds after the airplane door opened.

They looked to be in conversation while preparing to disembark, on what would be the first leg of a Southeast Asian tour which saw him travel to Indonesia on Tuesday (27 May).

While Macron played the incident off and smiled for the cameras while making their way out, one lip reader wasn’t so convinced.

Speaking to The Express, they said: “As the aircraft door opens, President Macron is seen turning toward Brigitte. In an unexpected moment, she pushes him in the face.”

They claimed that an awkward ‘hi’ from Macron was followed up by a ‘let’s go’ prompt to his 72-year-old wife.

“He thanks the pilot and waves at the cameras, trying to recover the public-facing image,” the lip reader says, picking up on the fact that Brigitte refused to hold his offered arm, and used the railing as support.

This is when things get tasty, according to the lip reader, who claimed Brigitte then muttered: “Dégage, espèce de loser,” which means, in English: “Stay away, you loser.”

The lip reader went on, alleging that Macron responded saying: “Essayons, s’il te plaît” (“Let’s try, please?”).

Brigitte apparently then said ‘Non’, which doesn’t need to be translated for you to get the gist.

Macron rounded off the conversation by stating: “Je vois,” or “I see”.

Following the viral nature of the video, Macron released a statement that wrote it off as a joke between the pair.

“There’s a video showing me joking and teasing my wife and somehow that becomes a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe, with people even coming up with theories to explain it,” he said.

The 47-year-old added that the footage was not fake, saying: “The videos are all real, and yes, sometimes people tamper with them, but people are attributing all kinds of nonsense to them.”

Summing it up as ‘nothing’, the president swiftly moved on, writing off ideas of any ‘domestic incident’.

Macron and Brigitte met when he was just 15 and she was 39, being a teacher at his school and the mother of one of his classmates.

In an interview with Paris Match in 2016, Brigitte claimed: “At the age of 17, Emmanuel said to me ‘whatever you do, I will marry you’.”

They have been married since 2007.
