Emma Thompson Reveals the Shocking Proposal She Received From Donald Trump on Her Divorce Day

Ever wonder how a single phone call could utterly rewrite history or who might’ve been sitting beside the US President had Hollywood taken a sharp left turn? Yeah, me too—it’s the stuff of wild dinner party conversations and, apparently, Emma Thompson’s real-life “sliding doors” moment. Imagine, for a second, Dame Emma swapping witty red carpet banter for White House briefings, all because Donald Trump fancied a dinner date right after her heartbreak with Kenneth Branagh . I mean, what kind of cosmic rom-com script is this? As Thompson herself mused, she could’ve changed the course of American history—with just one meal. Dive into the absurdity and almost-whimsical what-ifs that blur the lines between political theater and actual, well, theater… It’s not every day you get to picture Nanny McPhee as First Lady! In a parallel world, Dame Emma Thompson accepted the current US President Donald Trump’s alleged dinner date request, becoming the country’s first lady.

Acting royalty Thompson, 66, has two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, a Primetime Emmy Award and four decades worth of memorable on-screen moments that range from Matilda to the new Brian Kirk flick, The Dead of Winter.

It was the latter that the Nanny McPhee favourite was promoting at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, where she dropped the bombshell that Trump, 79, asked her out the same day she and ex-husband Kenneth Branagh, 64, settled their divorce

She claimed that she was working on the set of the 1998 dramedy Primary Colours when the phone rang, with the US president on the other line.

“Hello, this is Donald Trump,” she recalled him saying, as per The Telegraph.

“I thought it was a joke and asked, ‘How can I help you?’ Maybe he needed directions from someone.

“Then he said: ‘I’d love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner’.”

Thompson told revellers at the Swiss festival that she told Trump his offer was ‘very sweet’ and that she would get back to him in the future.

She continued, claiming that her divorce from Branagh probably had something to do with Trump’s presumed out-of-the-blue phone call.

“I realised that on that day, my divorce decree had come through. And I bet he’s got people looking for suitable people he could take out on his arm. You know, a nice divorcée, that’s what he was looking for.

“And he found the number in my trailer. I mean, that’s stalking,” she joked before voicing what she thought the proposed dinner date could’ve led to.

“I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump, and then I would have a story to tell. I could have changed the course of American history,” Thompson said.

Instead of dating Trump, the star went on to marry actor Greg Wise, whom she met on the set of the 1995 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility.

The pair share two children: son Tindyebwa ‘Tindy’ Agaba, 37, whom she adopted in 2003, and daughter Gaia, 25, who was born in 1999.

Meanwhile, Trump, who split from his second wife, Marla Maples, 61, in 1997, tied the knot with Melania Trump, 55, in 2005.

The pair share son Barron Trump, 19, whom they welcomed in 2006.
