Many people on the internet are losing their minds after seeing what the inside of a kangaroo pouch actually looks like.

A whopping 42 million kangaroos are said to reside in Australia, while it is possible to see them if other parts of the world too.

So, with such a huge population you’d expect us to really know everything there is to know about the animal in 2025 – but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

That is because a video documenting the inside pouch of a kangaroo has gone viral, which is where a baby kangaroo resides prior to coming into the world.

The short five-second clip uploaded Animal EDventure Park & Safari in Florida shows a small kangaroo in its mother’s pouch, a clip that has seen folks on social media lose their minds.

“I get life is beautiful and all that, but that looks disgusting,” one person commented on YouTube.

A second commented on Reddit: “This video began & I was inside a kangaroo pouch before I even knew what was happening.”

A third remarked: “F***. I’m Australian and old and I have never seen this. I imagined it was nice and cosy and fury. Wasn’t expecting a womb.”

Meanwhile, a fourth quipped: “I’m going to forget I saw this and continue with my life knowing that the inside of a kangaroo’s pouch is lined with soft warm fur. SOFT WARM FUR!!!”

While you might be thinking it’s a furry little pouch that you’d like to cosy on up in – don’t be fooled.

It’s nothing like you’d ever expect.

Instead, it’s more like a strange and naked skin pouch that’s bright red and thin enough that you can see the veins of mamma kangaroo all over.

Just imagine you’re inside of a womb with a hole in it – it’s exactly like that minus the amniotic fluids.

Like many other marsupials, Kangaroos raise their young in pouches that are extremely warm and durable.

According to Live Science, they can reach temperatures of 105 degrees Fahrenheit, the same as mom’s body temperature.

Rick Schwartz, an animal care supervisor and national spokesperson at the San Diego Zoo explained to the outlet the process of how a joey comes to be, and the way the pouch looks makes total sense after he talks through it.

Inside of the pouch holds four teats, where the baby joey can suckle until its content, after having spent 32 or 33 days of gestation in her womb, before being born through the vaginal canal.

Because of how short of a gestation period kangaroos have, the baby is extremely underdeveloped and is around the size of a jellybean.

So, the pouch allows it to latch onto the elongated teat, which will then slip down the throat of the baby to provide them nutrients for around three and a half or four months.

From then on, the joey will emerge from the pouch and the explore its surroundings – but can always return to the pouch for a nap and feed.

From ten to 12 months, the joey will be fully weaned off the milk, and will no longer need the pouch – allowing it to hop around as needed like all the other adults.

So, while it might not look great for you and me – it’s perfect for a joey.
