Jack Osbourne’s Emotional Revelation: The Unexpected Way He Learned of Ozzy's Death

Isn’t it strange how sometimes you can feel a whole world away from someone—and suddenly, news travels an ocean and knocks on your door in the pitch-black hush before dawn? That’s how Jack Osbourne learned his father, the indomitable Ozzy Osbourne—yes, the Prince of Darkness himself—had passed. One minute Jack was treasuring the memory of Ozzy’s final, fiery gig and an all-too-rare week where Ozzy was, in his son’s words, “happy,” and the next, he’s wide awake, wrestling with the gutting reality that life rarely ever gives us the perfect goodbye. It’s funny (in that shake-your-fist-at-the-sky way) how fate doesn’t care about time zones, final wishes, or even legends. Six weeks on, the ripples of grief and gratitude continue—echoing through stages, family homes, and streets lined with fans in black. What do we do with all that raw, unexpected sadness? Maybe we share it, maybe we search for meaning, or maybe we just ask: how do you say farewell to a rock icon who made us believe immortality might just wear a cross and guyliner? LEARN MORE

Jack Osbourne appeared overcome by emotion as he opened up about how he found out that his father Ozzy had passed away.

He revealed how he discovered that the Prince of Darkness had died while the Atlantic Ocean lay between him and his loved ones.

It’s been over six weeks since Ozzy‘s death on 22 July, which was confirmed by his family in a solemn statement just weeks after he wowed fans at his farewell Black Sabbath gig.

The 76-year-old managed to put on an incredible performance at Birmingham’s Villa Park despite his ailing health, allowing him to fulfil his ‘final wish‘ of returning home to the UK and taking to the stage one last time.

Fans turned out in force to pay their respects to Ozzy too when his funeral procession passed through his home city.

Jack, 39, has now spoken out about the last time he saw his late father alive before he left the UK to return to the States – and how ‘grateful’ he is for those moments.

“After his show, I stuck around for a week with my kids and hung out at the family house in England and it was awesome, my dad was in an amazing mood,” he told fans in a YouTube video.

“It was a lot of fun and looking back now and I am so grateful for that time. My dad was great, he was happy.”

Jack explained that around a week after he left the UK, Ozzy sadly passed away after suffering from a heart attack – and he found out after being awoken by a ‘knock on the door’ at 3.45am in the morning.

“Someone who’s worked for my family for, god probably 30 years now, was knocking on my door,” he said. “When I looked through the window and I saw it was him, I just knew.

“I knew something bad had happened. I was informed that my father had passed. Immediately, I don’t know… just pain, just sadness and just so many thoughts.”

Jack explained that as well as feeling ‘sad, frustrated and angry’ over the last few weeks, he has found solace in the fact that Ozzy is ‘not suffering anymore’.

“He’s not suffering anymore, he’s not struggling and that is something, you know,” he continued. “I wish he was still here. I wish he was still with us all, but he was having a rough go.

“I think people saw that at the show. But no one expected it to happen as quickly as it did and and when it did, it was not anything that was on our radar.”

Jack said there were a host of ‘ridiculous’ rumours circulating prior to Ozzy’s death, including one which claimed the rocker intended to euthanise himself in Switzerland.

According to the music legend’s son, these reports were ‘categorically untrue’ and Ozzy was looking forward to enjoying his retirement.

“My dad was so happy that he did the show and he was happy to move into this next phase of his life,” Jack said. “He wanted to to spend more time in England.

“He wanted to spend more time with my kids. He wanted to spend more time exploring different things, as much as he could.”

The former reality TV star said he flew to England hours after he was informed of Ozzy’s passing.

“Right when I got to the airport was when the news broke,” Jack added. “I was so grateful that I was on a plane where my phone wasn’t ringing.

“I was just getting texts and so many so many people reaching out, friends of mine and and colleagues and just, you know… that’s something that has been really unique about this experience.

“As overwhelming as it can be with the outpour of love and people reaching out, it’s also been really validating. My dad was a special guy and he meant a lot to a lot of people.

“He meant something very different to me than 99.999 percent of the world. But the common thread is that he was loved. He was loved so much and a lot of people are going to miss him.”
