A new Netflix documentary tells the horrifying story of a cruise ship disaster that claimed the lives of 33 people and led to the ship’s captain being sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Netflix have continued their recent trend of telling the most harrowing true crime stories around with their documentaries, with Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea coming shortly after the streamer’s recent docs on Mackenzie Shirilla and Taylor Parker.

Shipwrecked however tells the harrowing story of Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster in which the 4,000+ ocean liner struck a rock and began sinking.

The Netflix documentary features interviews with both employees and from passengers who escape the cruise alive.

One particularly shocking moment from the true crime doc saw an employee quit on the spot because of a demand made of her by her supervisor.

The cruise ship, run by Costa Vessels, sunk on 13 January, 2012 after hitting a rock formation during a sail-by salute.

The ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, departed the vessel when there were still over 300 people on board.

He was sentenced to 16 years in prison after being found guilty of numerous counts of manslaughter, as well as ‘causing a maritime disaster’ by abandoning ship whilst passengers were on board.

32 passengers died, with the 33rd death coming from a rescue diver who passed away due to injuries sustained during rescue efforts.

Costa Vessels ended up having to pay a fine of just $1,000,000 and offered a maximum of $11,000 per passenger in compensation.

Why did an employee of the ship quit in the middle of evacuation efforts?

Rose Metcalf had been working as a dancer aboard the ship for four months when the incident happened, stating that at that point it was her ‘dream job’ exploring the world and getting to dance.

Several passengers in the doc recount the moment the ship hit the rocks, stating that there was an incredibly loud banging sound and that the lights went out.

Passengers began running to the top deck but were told via an announcement that they should return to their cabins because it was a ‘blackout’.

Rose stated that she was in the Londra Bar at the time because she was dating a bartender, and the ship began to list.

She explains in the doc: “I remember thinking to myself, ‘I can’t stay here, I need to get off the ship.’

“As I’m walking along the corridor I see my superior and she says, ‘Where are you going?’”

Rose explained that, when she informed her supervisor she was heading to a muster point, she was told she needed to go and ‘entertain the guests’. She quit on the spot.

The dancer added: “I went straight to my muster station, I didn’t wait for any code, any signal.”

She later became trapped at the bottom of the sinking boat, but was able to use her flashlight to get the attention of a helicopter and escape.
