Tom Cruise’s Daughter Breaks Away With Shocking New Name—What Prompted the Final Split?

What’s in a name? Well, apparently—if you’re the child of a Hollywood megastar—everything. But, as Suri “Noelle” (formerly Cruise) is proving, sometimes you’ve got to flip the script on your own life story . Can you imagine waking up and thinking, “Today’s the day I don’t just choose what’s for breakfast, I choose my identity”? For most of us, rebranding means updating a LinkedIn headline—maybe a tiptoe into a new font—but Suri’s gone full main-character energy, leaving both “Cruise” and “Holmes” in the rearview. Does this make her the trailblazer of celebrity offspring autonomy, or just the latest in a growing A-list family trend of kids clocking out from inherited baggage, one surname at a time? Curious how we got here—and why young adults who can barely decide on a major are suddenly experts at name swaps? The drama runs deeper than a soap opera binge on a rainy weekend, and trust me, you don’t want to miss the clues hidden in this remarkable family saga . LEARN MORE

Suri, the daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, has been estranged from her father for years and has now cut the final string still connecting them together. His surname.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who have obtained documents showing that Suri changed her name by the time she registered to vote in Pennsylvania in October 2024, removing Cruise from her name.

In a twist, she hasn’t taken her mother’s surname of Holmes, either, but blazed her own path by taking the name Suri Noelle.

That’s her mother’s middle name.

Suri is a musical theatre student at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University and residents of Pennsylvania are required to use their legal name when registering to vote.

However, she did not file a name change request in Allegheny County, where she registered, indicating her name may have been changed before she left her home in New York – where name change records are usually kept private – for uni, suggests Page Six.

It’s added that Suri has been using Noelle publicly for a few years, including at her high school graduation in 2024, and it’s unclear when it was officially changed.

LadBible Group has approached representatives of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes for comment.

The Mail reports that Suri has been ‘completely estranged’ from Cruise, 64, for years after he divorced her mother, Holmes, 47, in 2012, when she was just six years old.

The last photo of Suri and her movie megastar father together was taken at Disneyland in 2012, with the pair’s relationship reportedly ending the following year.

Cruise and Holmes married in 2006 before they divorced six years later, with Holmes having custody of Suri ever since.

The report adds that the rift stems from Holmes’ and Suri’s decision to abandon Scientology.

A source told The Mail in 2024: “Tom does not exist to her.

Another said: “Suri will not have any contact with her father, despite being 18, and even if he called, she would not answer.

“He does not exist to Katie or Suri, and his daughter does not want to rely on him for anything. She feels that she has one parent and that is her mother.”

Suri follows in the footsteps of Brad Pitt’s children

It was reported in June that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter, Zahara, dropped the ‘Pitt’ from her double-barrel surname as she collected her diploma at her graduation from Selman College.

She was introduced on stage as Zahara Marley Jolie.

The name change was then made legal, with documents obtained by PEOPLE reportedly showing Zahara filed a petition to change her name in the Superior Court of California.

She has followed in the footsteps of her siblings.

Brother Maddox is said to have officially petitioned to also drop his Fight Club actor father’s surname from his own earlier this month.

Shiloh did so in 2024 on the day she turned 18.

Jolie and Pitt share six children together: Maddox, 24, Pax, 22, Shiloh, 22, and 17-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne and half of them have legally filed to drop Pitt from their surname following their parents’ divorce.

The Mr and Mrs Smith stars separated in 2016 when Jolie accused her husband of ‘abusive behaviour’ towards herself and their children while on a private plane to France in 2016. Pitt denies this.

According to court documents, Jolie alleged that Pitt had attacked her and one of their children onboard the aircraft.

He is alleged to have choked one of his children and struck another in the face. Jolie claims he grabbed her by the head, shook her and pushed her into a bathroom wall, also allegedly pouring beer over her and his children.

Criminal charges were not pursued and Pitt has denied the allegations.
