Anne Hathaway Shuts Down Pregnancy Conspiracy Theories With One Unforgettable Move

Raise your hand if you ever imagined that, in 2024, the biggest conspiracy theory at a red carpet event would revolve around—wait for it—Anne Hathaway’s baby bump. Really, of all the plot twists Hollywood could serve us between X-Files reboots, streaming scandals, and awards show gaffes, who had ‘fake Hathaway pregnancy’ on their cultural bingo card ? I’ll admit, as someone who spends far too many hours decoding what drives virality (and what definitely does not), I find it fascinating when strangers online rally together to analyze a woman’s midsection as if they’re auditioning for CSI: Maternity Ward . Yet here we are, because the internet never disappoints, and speculation swirled faster than Anne could swap her signature red-carpet gowns for that killer jeans-and-crop-top combo. The Princess of Genovia herself handled it with more grace (and humor) than I could ever muster—reminding us all that, while you can fake hair, you sure can’t fake a bump . Seriously, don’t you have to wonder: Why do people get so invested in a celebrity’s stomach, and what does that say about our collective attention span? Spill your thoughts, because this is one bump that’s more real—and entertaining—than most of what’s streaming right now. LEARN MORE.

The Princess of Genovia herself has spoken out on speculation that she’s been wearing a fake bump on the red carpet.

Anne Hathaway is having a huge year for films (from The Odyssey to The Devil Wears Prada 2) and on Sunday (9 August) took to Los Angeles for the launch of yet another – The End of Oak Street.

And switching out the typical gown look, the 43-year-old went for an elegant ‘jeans and a nice top’ look, with a cropped, trailing top making room for her pregnant stomach.

However, with people continuing to insist on commenting on a woman’s body, some have claimed Hathaway has been donning a fake baby bump.

“That is not real,” some wrote on social media, as the star has now poked fun at the theories with an iconic ‘real bump’ response.

As videos of Hathaway at the event went viral on social media, some commented to say the likes of: “Why does it look fake?” and, “It does look fake.”

One even put: “That’s fake and scary,” as another went as far to say: “That looks very strange to me.”

“Oh come on. That is not real,” others simply put.

However, many have been quick to Hathaway’s defence as they point out: “News flash people, not every baby bump looks the same.”

“A lot of people in these comments have never seen a pregnant belly on someone who has abs,” another added.

With many agreeing: “The fact that other women were questioning her literal pregnant belly because ‘mine didn’t look like that’ is so strange to me.”

“What’s up with these comments,” one put. “She is literally just showing her bump…”

And now Hathaway has chimed in, with a tongue-in-cheek caption alongside a montage video of herself getting ready and attending the event in LA.

“Fake hair, real bump,” the actor wrote. “Enjoy The @endofoakstreet Block Party chaos with me as my outfit literally melts in the heat!!”

The video sees a stylist securing a hairpiece to add to her ponytail as she doubles-down: “It’s not my hair.”

The new sci-fi survival feature also stars Ewan McGregor and is released in cinemas this Friday (14 August).

“After a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighbourhood to someplace unknown, the Platt family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognisable surroundings,” the synopsis reads.

Hathaway announced back in June that she is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman, who she has been married to since 2012.

Her growing bump has made a number of red-carpet appearances so far, evident in press for The Odyssey.

But it has drawn much greater attention thanks to her custom Atelier Prabal Gurung crop top for The End of Oak Street premiere. The designer described the piece as a ‘sculptural high-low halter top with a cascading train’ which she paired with low-rise jeans and red stilettos, allowing her stomach to comfortably be on show.
