A director who has worked on major shows like Black Mirror and The Great had a scathing response when she was asked if she’d be a part of the highly anticipated Harry Potter series.
39-year-old Canadian writer and director Ally Pankiw boldly shared a screenshot appearing to show an exchange of text messages that she had with her reps about working on the series.
Posting to Instagram, it’s safe to say she made it clear she wanted nothing to do with the project with a simple yet honest reply.
“I have an instinct on the answer, but I feel compelled to ask” the text message sent to her read. It continued: “Harry Potter? Hard no?”

“Absolutely f***ing not! Lol,” Pankiw then responded, adding: “Thank you for asking”. The message was then responded to with: “Of course 🙂 I assumed as much (And agreed).”
Posting on social media with over 59,000 likes, she then captioned the exchange: “It simply is this easy to say no to funding transphobia.”

The screenshot had a huge reaction in the comments section, with Loki and Doctor Who director Kate Herron also chiming in.
She said that she had similar messages about the series, and went on to comment: “Yeah, thank you exactly! Respect and love to you, Ally. They’ve asked me twice, and I’ve had to explain my answer is never gonna change from a no.”
Rowling has been widely criticised for saying she believes biological sex is real and immutable and has been openly critical of self-declared gender identity, calling it ‘quasi-religious’ and ‘anti-science’. She has argued she is defending biological sex.
She shared her views on gender in June 2020 with an article titled ‘Opinion: Creating a more equal post-Covid-19 world for people who menstruate’.

She wrote at the time: “If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased.” The Harry Potter author explicitly added that ‘trans people need and deserve protection’ and said she wanted trans women to be safe.
She has also denied being transphobic and previously said she respects ‘every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them’.
Several cast members of the Harry Potter film series have also expressed disagreement with Rowling’s views previously, including Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter, and Emma Watson, who portrayed Hermione Granger.
Radcliffe said he believes ‘trans women are women’ while Watson has said: “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are.”
Ralph Fiennes, who played Lord Voldemort, has been against the online backlash aimed at Rowling. “The verbal abuse directed at her is disgusting, it’s appalling,” he told The New York Times.

Bel Powley, who will portray Petunia Dursley in the adaptation of Rowling’s books, has also spoken out in response of the author’s views.
The actress, 34, will feature in the upcoming HBO Max adaptation, which is set to premiere on Christmas Day. She will star alongside recently announced Nicholas Hoult.
“I strongly disagree with JK Rowling’s views on gender,” Powley told The Telegraph.

“I think that the trans community deserve safety and dignity and respect and total acceptance. But I love Harry Potter. I grew up with the books. I am from that first generation of readers and, again, I love magic and spookiness.
“I believe that energy doesn’t disappear. The world doesn’t get lighter if someone dies, does it? The energy shifts into the trees and the grass and the sky and I find that quite comforting.”
