Death Row Horror: Inside Christa Pike’s Harrowing Escape from a Failed Lethal Injection

So, picture this: an inmate on Tennessee’s Death Row, Christa Pike, just survived not one, but two lethal injections — you know, the ones that are supposed to be a one-way ticket to the afterlife. Talk about dodging a bullet… or in this case, a needle. After spending over 30 years behind bars for a gruesome crime, Pike’s execution was finally set to happen on September 30th. But when the deadly cocktail of pentobarbital was administered, something went sideways. Instead of the expected outcome, she’s still very much alive, receiving life-saving treatment, and raising a flurry of questions: How does one survive lethal injections? What’s next in a system that clearly hit a snag? And honestly, how many more “botched” executions before we admit maybe the method is just plain broken? There’s a strange mix of dark irony and real human tragedy here — a drama that’s as confounding as it is unsettling. Curious for the full story? LEARN MORE.

After Tennessee Death Row inmate Christa Pike inexplicably survived both of her lethal injections in yesterday’s execution attempt, many will be wondering what happens next for the 50-year-old.

Pike has spent the last three decades as a prisoner on Death Row, after she and her then-boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp, beat, tortured and killed 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer at a job training camp for troubled teens.

On Wednesday 30 September, Pike’s execution was finally set to go ahead and although a crowd including family and members of the media gathered at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, they did not witness her death.

Despite two doses of the usually deadly pentobarbital being administered, her attorney confirmed in the aftermath that she was ‘being provided life-saving measures’, as her legal team filed an emergency motion to halt the execution after her heart was still beating.

Pike’s legal team said in a statement to the Tennessean newspaper: “Tonight the State of Tennessee once again failed to carry out a lawful execution.

“We take no pleasure in being right, but the concerns raised by Ms Pike proved to be true: difficult vein access, blown veins, degraded pentobarbital, no emergency medical care available when things inevitably go wrong, all under a protocol that remains veiled in secrecy.”

Remarkably, this is only the latest in a string of failed execution attempts in the US in recent years, with Kenneth Smith eventually dying using an unconventional method in 2024 after the prison officials had previously failed to find a vein when trying to complete the execution in 2022.

Back in May, triple-murderer Tony Carruthers also survived a botched lethal injection, when prison officials once again failed to find a vein, with the execution later called off.

However, in Pike’s case, it seems as if the drug was administered correctly, but failed to do its job which could lead to serious health complications for the prisoner, although they may be pale in comparison to the permanence of death.

Maya Foa, director of the human rights group Reprieve US, spoke about the dangers of failed lethal injections following Smith’s botched attempt back in 2022.

She told The Guardian: “The recent spate of disastrous lethal injection executions have shown that whatever the drug, whatever the protocol, condemned prisoners often spend their final hours in agonising pain and distress.

“With each gruesome scene in the death chamber, we are witnessing the consequences of persisting with a broken method of execution, in real time.”

Doctors close to Pike’s case suggested to the BBC that the lethal injection likely failed because her blood level didn’t reach the necessary level to cause apnoea and cardiovascular failure, and claimed that the prisoner could suffer a brain injury as she continues to receive treatment in hospital.

Following yet another failed execution, the Tennessee Department of Correction released a statement via spokesperson Dorinda Carter to suggest that every step of the established execution protocol was followed correctly.

“The lethal injection chemical in the protocol has consistently been effective, and the protocol does not allow for additional procedures beyond what was carried out this evening. Christa Pike has been transported to an off-site medical facility,” she said.
