Jacob Tremblay’s new Netflix film Unabomber is the biggest movie on the streamer right now, topping the global charts.
For many, Tremblay may seem like a new star in Unabomber that has come out of nowhere, but for film fans who have followed his journey they will know that the child star has starred in some incredible Oscar-nominated and winning movies.
His first breakout role as the co-star of Room alongside Brie Larson, who won the Oscar for Best Actor, but the movie that really made a name for Tremblay was Wonder, a film in which he made an extreme transformation that was also nominated for an Oscar.
Wonder starred Tremblay as Auggie, a young boy who suffers from Treacher Collins syndrome which causes severe facial deformities, trying to overcome bullying at a new school.
The makeup on Tremblay for the part was extensive, with the artist having to halve the time it would traditionally take to apply it in order to comply with child labour laws.
He was just 11 years old when the film came out in 2017, and spoke about the 90 minute process to apply the makeup in an interview with ABC News, saying: “They had a neck piece, a face piece connected to a mechanism to make my eyes droop, contact lenses, dentures and a wig.
“Wearing the prosthetic helped me to become the character.”
The film was a huge success in addition to its Oscar nomination, making $315 million off a budget of just $20 million and sitting at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.9/10 on IMDb.
Richard Roeper of the Chicago-Sun Times gave the film a three-out-of-four-star review, review, saying of Tremblay’s performance: “Unrecognizable under the prosthetics and the makeup, Jacob Tremblay is indeed wondrous as Auggie.”
Now though Tremblay has transformed himself in a very different way for Netflix’s Unabomber, becoming the infamous domestic terrorist whose decade-plus long campaign of nail-bombings killed three and injured 23.

Tremblay spoke to CBC News about how he was able to find a relation to Kaczynski, who was a maths prodigy who attended Harvard at 16, saying: “In this industry, I’m also often the youngest person there. So I could kind of relate to that feeling of awkwardness and not really fitting in. You try and find those parallels, for sure.
“It makes me really feel for someone who—like Ted—had so much talent at a young age and had so much potential.
“I just really hope that people watching this movie can think about this going forward—about talented people, people with skills, and how they want to elevate them and bring them up in life, rather than using them.”
Unabomber is available to stream on Netflix now.
