Red Baron Employee Halts Fundraiser Amidst Unbelievable Backlash After Shocking Streamer Prank—What Happened Next Will Surprise You

Ever wonder what happens when internet pranksters go too far—and the internet steps in to rewrite the ending? Meet Walt Z, a humble Red Baron worker from Michigan whose viral moment of public harassment by a streamer opened a floodgate of empathy (and donations) from thousands of strangers. Imagine being just a regular dad-of-four, stacking shelves, minding your own business, only to have your sanity tested by a prank that simulates stealing your digital wallet. The Apple Pay chime might have sounded like a joke to some, but for Walt, it was a harsh reminder of the daily grind and real struggles—not to mention a mortgage to pay and kids to get to bed. Yet, what followed was a powerful testament to community spirit when a GoFundMe set up in his name raked in nearly $800,000 before Walt wisely decided to hit pause and focus on what really matters: his family. Can a little viral chaos actually spark kindness on this scale? Let’s unpack the saga of Walt, the unexpected viral hero, and the generosity that came roaring back at the pranksters. LEARN MORE

A Red Baron worker who went viral after he was ‘publicly harassed by a streamer’ has paused donations on a GoFundMe page set up for him after it pulled in almost $800,000 (£595,000).

The man, who has been identified as Walt Z, was working at a Red Baron in Michigan when two internet pranksters approached him while he was stacking shelves and pretended to steal his money.

In the clip, which was originally filmed back in August, the streamer approaches Walt and asks him for the time, but when he pulled out his phone to check, the prankster took out their own phone and made it play the Apple Pay chime – to make it appear as though they had just taken money from Walt’s Apple Wallet.

The dad-of-four initially kept his cool and told the streamer to leave him alone as he wasn’t in the mood and asked them to exit the store.

But when the prankster continued, things escalated with Walt telling him: “This is not a joke to me, OK? I don’t have time for this crap in my life. My life is hard enough as it is.

“I don’t need this. I have kids at home that were put to bed without me now, because I was supposed to be at home an hour ago and I’m still out here working.

“And I gotta get up at five in the morning and do ten more stores, so this is not a joke to me.”

The person recording then apologised, but Walt hit back: “No, you’re not sorry because you’ve got a smug look on your face.

“You’re probably making money off this! I can’t even pay my goddamn mortgage, and I got four kids at home!”

The clip went viral this week after it was reshared online and sparked a furious response from social media users who were less than impressed with the streamer’s antics.

On X, one person wrote: “Sickening punks. Praying for the working man here. This makes me sick.”

A second said: “Nuisance streamers are the scum of the Earth.”

While someone else said: “I feel so sorry for this man who is trying his best to make a living.”

Viewer Luke Oakenshield was so upset by the interaction, he set up a GoFundMe page to ‘support a harassed’ worker.

“This fundraiser is about standing up for a working person who is busting their butt and should not have to fear losing stability because someone wanted content and clicks,” Oakenshield wrote.

Donations flooded in for Walt, with more than 22,000 people chipping in to raise a whopping $784,273 (£582,000).

Walt’s employer has also appeared to join in with the discourse, posting on X to say: “He’s still here. He’s got a fan club. Including us.”

Although the post didn’t mention Walt by name, it included an image that read: “Employee of the month nominations are now closed.”

However, Walt has since paused donations, which were almost 90 percent of the way to the $900,000 (£668,000) target, and shared a sweet message of gratitude to all who donated.

“Your kind words have meant the world to my family and I this past week,” he wrote.

“I still cannot believe how much you have all rallied behind us, and I can never thank you enough. I’ve been able to spend lots of extra time at home with my family this week.

I’ve also stayed in touch with Luke, and I look forward to continuing that friendship as he navigates all the blessings that have come his way.”

Walt went on to say that he’d decided to remain out of the public eye and didn’t want to participate in any media interviews as he felt it was ‘the best decision’ for his family.

“I’ve decided to pause donations to my fundraiser today, Thursday, November 5, marking one week of your incredible generosity and support for my family and I,” he continued.

The kind-hearted grocery worker then urged those who ‘have the means and would like to continue helping others’ to ‘consider supporting another fundraiser, a local charity, or a church helping families in need this holiday season’.

Concluding his update, he wrote: “Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, and for making my family feel so supported. We will never forget it.”
