This feat of preservation has only further ensured that Aspendos will remain most widely recognized for its Roman-era history. However, the discovery of the city’s Eastern Necropolis and this prominent tomb of a possible wrestler will shed more light on what the city was like during an earlier period of antiquity, when Aspendos was under Greek rule.
“The tomb is considered one of the most important findings regarding the Classical Period of Aspendos, which has not been adequately represented by archaeological data to date,” the ministry said.
Now, the team has more of the Eastern Necropolis to investigate, and they hope to uncover additional artifacts from the city’s Greek era.
In the words of Ersoy, “With every new find in Aspendos, we will continue to complete the missing pages of our history, protect our cultural heritage through scientific studies, and carry it into the future.”
