Apple's Thinnest iPhone Yet Sparks Fierce Debate Over Sky-High Prices—Are They Worth It?

So Apple just dropped its thinnest iPhone ever—5.6mm slim, they say, and lighter than a feather but still packing “amazing all-day battery life.” Sounds like sci-fi, right? Yet here’s the kicker: the new iPhone 17 Air costs £999, a cool £200 more than the standard iPhone 17. Wait—didn’t “Air” used to mean cheaper? People on X are straight-up baffled, throwing shade and memes faster than you can say “ProMotion display.” With a titanium ‘space-grade’ frame, a snazzy 48MP camera, and colors like sky blue, they’re selling it as a “piece of the future” that seemingly vanishes in your hand. But is it worth splurging just to hold a phone that might disappear—along with your wallet? Let’s dive into the madness and see what’s behind Apple’s latest flex. LEARN MORE

People are divided over the price of Apple’s thinnest ever iPhones.

The tech giant announced their new set of iPhones during their event this evening (9 September), including the release of a brand-new smartphone.

Their new iPhone 17 Air is just 5.6mm thin, with a 6.5″ ProMotion display and a ceramic shield front and back.

“Despite being much thinner and lighter, iPhone Air still gets amazing all-day battery life,” the company added.

It features a 6.5-inch ProMotion display, a single 48 MP rear camera, a titanium build, 12 GB of RAM, and the same A19 chip as the 17.

“The 48MP Fusion Main camera with 2x Telephoto supports the latest advanced features like next-generation portraits and more,” Apple said.

The new eSIM-only phone also has 3,000 nits of peak brightness, as Apple claims the design is its ‘most durable’ yet.

It’s also got a titanium frame that is ‘space grade’, and it comes in white, gold, black, and sky blue colors.

“Our intention was to make an iPhone that feels like a piece of the future, powerful, yet so thin and light it seems to disappear in your hands,” an Apple presenter said.

However, it’s priced £200 more than the standard iPhone 17, coming in at £999.

People on X are a bit divided by the price, as one person said: “Wtf is Air more expensive than the 17?!”

“I thought Air was cheaper than 17,” another added, while a third penned: “Yikes, that is one expensive phone. I’d be scared to do anything but use it on speaker while it was being held in a cradle.”

Whereas others thought it was decent deal: “Affordable yes but why get a new phone now when I just got iPhone 15 3 months ago.”

“Vintage Apple vibes!” a second wrote.

“I love it’s design,” said a third.

iPhone 17 prices:

The new devices will be ready to pre-order by 12 September.

“The latest iPhone models come with tons to love. Helpful Apple Intelligence tools to make your everyday easier. Better performance and reliability with Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread — all enabled by N1, our new wireless chip. Fast and secure connections with 5G and eSIM.
