A man and woman who were tied together for a whole year have opened up about what they discovered during the bizarre collaboration.
Tehching Hsieh, a painter and performance artist, and Linda Montano, also a performance artist, bound themselves together with an eight-foot rope tied at their waists, but were not allowed to touch one another for the entire 12 months.
The aim of the art collaboration, titled Rope Piece, was to explore issues like freedom, privacy, control, and commitment, as well as the way humans coexist and rely on each other.
All daily activities like cooking, showering and sleeping were undertaken while tied together, and the experiment was documented in a series of photographs.

Hsieh, 75, and Montano, 84, who took part in the performance between 1983 and 1984, found themselves in constant disagreement while bound together, with both artists admitting that the lack of privacy proved to be especially intense.
Simple everyday tasks, like speaking to friends on the phone, proved difficult, but the biggest stress came from having to seek each other’s approval to fulfil sudden needs and impulses throughout the day.
For example, when one person needed to use the bathroom, get a drink of water or look out the window, both artists had to walk.
Physical fights erupted between Hsieh and Montana, with the artists yanking on the their end of the rope and then refusing to speak to each other.
“We were becoming more animal-like. Somewhat like monkeys,” said Montano.
“We began pointing with sounds and groans and moans. We stopped talking almost completely.”
Adding to the difficulty, both Hsieh and Montana could refuse an action suggested by the other. Their rule was that a negative vote wins over a positive.
The tense situations that evolved were tough and Montano even admitted that if the rule not to touch one another hadn’t been in place, she would have killed Hsieh a thousand times.
On two occasions, Hsieh threw pieces of furniture to the floor very close to Montano, though they did not strike her.

Rope Piece was one of six art performances created by Hsieh. Completed between 1978 and 2000, he carried out five year-long performances as well as one that spanned 13 years.
These performances involved extreme rules and conditions which Hsieh would then adhere to for a set amount of time.
One piece saw him lock himself in a wooden cage, while another saw him spend an entire year outside, during which he did not enter any kind building or shelter.
