A video clip showing an interviewer appearing to suggest Chris Evans was a ‘failed actor’ has left people stunned.

The 44-year-old is currently promoting his upcoming film Sacrifice alongside co-star Anya Taylor-Joy, which sees him star as a struggling actor who is kidnapped by a volcano-worshipping, eco-terrorist group who believe sacrificing three people will save the whole of humanity.

Directed and co-written by Romain Gavras, alongside Will Arbery, the film boasts of a star-studded cast, with Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, John Malkovich, Sam Richardson, and even a cameo from Charli XCX.

Sacrifice premiered to mixed reviews at Toronto Film Festival over the weekend, with the film’s stars present to face the media’s thoughts and opinions.

Which, unfortunately for Evans, included a question which appeared to make a dig at his career.

During a Q&A, one reporter was filmed asking Evans if he had ‘any concerns’ playing a part which was ‘potentially a bit closer to home’. The remainder of the woman’s question is then drowned out by laughter from the surprised audience while Taylor-Joy looks round and appears to smile awkwardly at the moment.

The reporter also appears to be thrown off by the reaction, mumbling her apologies about going ‘viral‘ before adding: “Where there any concerns about it shaking the fictional world of the film?”

While Evans did not appear to be offended by the question and calmly answered by explaining what had drawn him to the film, the internet of course had a lot of thoughts on the question and the reactions in the room.

“Really hate the narrative that Chris Evans is a failed movie star or a bad actor. The man has been acting consistently in films for 30 years and has been in some of the biggest movies of the past 25 years,” one person wrote on X. “How anyone could say he’s a wash up is beyond me.”

“What the hell is going on and why have they unleashed all the interviewers from the pits of hell,” wondered a second person.

Over on Reddit, not everyone believed the journalist was attempting to be deliberately rude or snarky with the question, but had instead fumbled her words at the last minute.

“Her whole comment seems erratic so I think she was trying to ask in the way of like, every actor has had that period of fear, and was just nervous and jumbled it,” the user suggested, which certainly makes more sense than intentionally attempting to ruffle the feathers of a celebrity.

Meanwhile, another attendee later provided further context by uploading Evans’ full answer to the question, which sees the Captain America star describe his character as a man who was ‘suffering’ and ‘at a crossroads in his life’.

“To me that felt universal,” he explained. “To me it felt more like a human story.”
