A haunting true crime documentary seeks to get to the bottom of the murder of an Irish man living in America with his new wife and children.

In April 2011 Jason Corbett moved from Limerick, Ireland to the United States with his two children after marrying US native Molly Martens. The pair had met in 2008 after Corbett hired her to look after his children, two years after his first wife died from an unexpected asthma attack.

The Corbett’s relocated to North Carolina and from the outside appeared to have the perfect family life.

However this would all unravel on 2 August 2015 when Jason was killed at his home.

Netflix has now released a new documentary on the series, watch the trailer below:

Titled A Deadly American Marriage, the programme features interviews from interviews from Corbett’s two children, Jack and Sarah, as well as Martens and her father, Thomas Martens.

The documentary explores the fateful night of Jason’s death, including the 911 call placed by his father-in-law, and the two arguments over what led to the cause of his death.

Molly and her father would ultimately be arrested over the death of Jason and found guilty of second-degree murder, receiving sentences of 20 and 25 years each.

However the pair maintained that Jason’s death was down to self-defence, claiming that Jason threatened to kill her, and appealed the original verdict, receiving reduced sentences for manslaughter after a successful appeal.

The pair would receive reduced sentences of 51 to 74 months in prison and were released in June 2024.

A Deadly American Marriage looks at both sides of the argument, with both Jack and Sarah and, Molly and Thomas giving their version of events.

“This film is structured like a trial,” filmmakers Jessica Burgess and Jenny Popplewell told TUDUM of the project. “It presents key arguments from both sides and allows the audience to draw their own conclusions about the case.”

The pair continued: “From the very beginning, we approached both families. For the film to remain objective and balanced, we never discussed information we learned with either side.”

The documentary also examines at the aftermath of the case, which included a custody dispute between Molly and Jason’s family over whether the children should return to Ireland or remain in the United States. Molly had previously wanted to adopt the children so they could acquire US citizenship, however Jason wanted his children to retain their Irish passports and instead applied for green cards.
