David Tennant suffered a slight wardrobe malfunction at the BAFTAs, though luckily for him it didn’t make it onto the final broadcast which went out to the public.

The awards show is put on a couple of hours before it actually goes onto our TV screens, so there’s time to cut out any mistakes or mishaps which may occur.

Take, for example, some of Tennant’s jokes about Donald Trump while he was on hosting duty last night (16 February), which drew some laughs from the audience but was taken out of the broadcast before they could be shown on the BBC.

Some of the show has to be cut for time anyway as it goes on longer than the broadcast slot, otherwise they’d just have to cut the show before you knew who won Best Makeup & Hair.

Another part that got cut was a bit of a wardrobe-based blunder for Tennant right near the start of the show as something fell out of his kilt.

No, not that you dirty-minded people. It was his microphone wire.

Tennant was stepping out for his opening monologue decked out in a fine-looking outfit complete with a kilt when the microphone wire fell from the traditional Scottish attire.

The Doctor Who star joked ‘we’ll cut that bit out’, and they did indeed remove it from the broadcast.

He had very much been making use of the flexibility that a kilt can provide a man during the opening to the BAFTAs as he entered the ceremony performing a rendition of The Proclaimers classic tune ‘500 Miles’.

The singing had been started by Brian Cox (the acting one, not the science one) in Tennant’s mirror (it makes sense in context) before the BAFTAs host stepped out into the crowd and started getting various attending celebrities to join him in the da-da-da-da-da bits of the song.

From those watching the BAFTAs along at home there was much appreciation for Mr Tennant and his fashion sense, with him having arrived in a rather resplendent outfit with all sorts of fancy detailing and ending up changing into a tartan suit.

It was his second year in a row hosting the awards ceremony, which this year saw actor Warwick Davis honoured with the BAFTA Fellowship.

Conclave took home the award for Best Film, while Adrien Brody and Mikey Madison got the top acting gongs on the night.

Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl picked up the BAFTA for Best Animated Film.

The most successful films at the ceremony were Conclave and The Brutalist, each of them receiving four awards.
