Discover the Shocking Truth Behind Mayonnaise: It's Enough to Make You Swear Off It!

Sure, the weather might not exactly be ideal, but it’s a bank holiday weekend and you know what that means for British households? Barbecues and tinnies! And what’s a barbecue without a generous spread of sauces? You’d think it’s all about the grilling, but let’s be honest, the real magic happens when you dive into that ketchup or mayo. But while you’re busy doubling up on sauces, have you ever stopped to ponder over what’s smeared all over your burger? Especially mayonnaise – because recently, it’s thrown some folks for a loop, and it’s not just because they found out they might be unknowingly rubbing a raw egg emulsion on their food. Curious? Me too! LEARN MORE.

Sure the weather might not exactly be ideal but it’s still a bank holiday weekend which means Brits will be pulling out their barbecues and cracking open the tinnies.

And regardless of what foods you’re going to be grilling away to a crisp, there’s an absolute must that’ll be laid out on the table; sauces.

Maybe some tomato ketchup for your burger, and perhaps you’ll double up on that with a squirt of mayo. I mean let’s be real, there’s got to be at least two condiments laid out for people to choose from.

But while it’s pretty obvious that tomatoes are in tomato ketchup, it seems not everyone actually realises what’s in mayonnaise.

So after users on TikTok demonstrated just how easy it is to make at home in viral clips, some people have been left ‘feeling sick’ over the simple ingredients.

It really is simple too as the most basic, pure version of making that classic creamy white dip is just oil, egg, acid and salt.

Yep, not any cream in sight. But it’s the addition of egg that seems to be freaking people out.

All you literally have to do to make mayo at home is to blend together egg yolks with a bit of salt, something acidic like vinegar or lemon juice and a bit of plain oil.

But with the raw eggs being used, it’s left some users on TikTok baffled as they comment on one man’s demonstration video: “How is mayonnaise safe when it has raw egg in it?”

So, yeah, the eggs aren’t exactly ‘cooked’ before they go into the mayo but they’re safe as they are supposed to be pasteurised when you buy them, killing off harmful food poisoning bacteria.

“The amount of people that don’t know what mayonnaise is made from is concerning,” one user wrote as others flood the comments in confusion.

“How the hell does it turn white?” someone else asked.

This is down mainly to the mixing of the ingredients, incorporating air into the mayo and oxidising it to create the whiter colour. So, a combination of aeration and emulsification of the ingredients end up turning it from that egg yolk-yellow to the creamy mayo white.

“Who tf even came up with mayonnaise,” asked another as they are baffled by the simple ingredients.

One added: “I will never see mayonnaise the same.”

As another said: “I can still remember how I felt so betrayed the day I learned how mayonnaise is actually made.”

Others even shared the clip on X with sick face emojis.
