Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and AntiquitiesIn 2024, archaeologists discovered the missing half of another massive Ramesses II statue elsewhere in northern Egypt.

And given such discoveries, perhaps it’s surprising that this particular site hadn’t been excavated before now.

Mahmoud Emam, an Egyptologist at Cairo University who is familiar with the site of the most recent discovery, told Live Science that Behbeit El-Hagar is known for its temple dedicated to Isis, and that the newly-uncovered statue remains were found right on the western side of the temple complex.

In 2017, Emam and other researchers reported on previous discoveries of other fragments inscribed with the name Ramesses II unearthed near the Isis temple, one from a wall and the other from a statue.

“We concluded that Ramesses II had undertaken major building works at the temple and recommended further archaeological investigations to shed more light on the early history of the site,” Emam said.
