GTA VI’s Surprising Price Tag Revealed—Is This the Future of Gaming Costs?

Remember when a brand-new copy of GTA 5 set you back just £35? I know—2013 feels more like ancient history now than the price tag itself. Well, grab your calculators and a stiff drink, because the much-hyped GTA 6 isn’t just arriving fashionably late; it might be showing up in a golden helicopter, demanding an entrance fee that could make even a seasoned criminal duo (hi Lucia and her mystery partner) cringe. Set in the vibrant, sun-soaked (read: chaotic) Leonida—a loving, neon-lit nod to Florida—Rockstar seems hell-bent on raising the stakes in open-world immersion…and possibly breaking our wallets in the process. If you ever wondered whether your digital life of crime would cost you more than your real one, brace yourself. We might soon find out just how much “spenny” a trip down Vice City’s memory lane can get. LEARN MORE.

The standard edition of GTA 5 cost just £35 in the UK when it was released in 2013.

Over 10 years later though you best expect GTA 6 to be a lot more spenny.

Set in the Florida-inspired fictional state of Leonida, players are set to get their hands on criminal duo Lucia and her male partner, in what seems to be Rockstar’s version of Bonnie and Clyde.

We’re expecting there to be a massive open world, enhanced graphics and a more immersive experience.

However, it appears Rockstar are making us wait even longer for GTA 6 following their initial 2025 release window.

New GTA 6 release date

After months of silence, the gaming company revealed the new release date today (2 May), and fans aren’t going to be happy.

Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026. We are very sorry that this is later than you expected,” Rockstar said in a statement.

“The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.”

How much will GTA 6 cost?

When it comes to pricing, Rockstar hasn’t officially confirmed the cost.

But gaming analyst Matthew Ball has said in his annual ‘State of Video Gaming’ report for 2025 that GTA 6 will be considerably more expensive than its predecessor.

“There is hope that Take-Two will price GTA VI at $80 or even $100,” Ball said. “Thereby breaking a key price barrier and enabling the rest of the market to move up, too.”

Over on X, Twitch streamer xQc defended the potential price tag, writing: “Gamers will buy 5 early access, half baked $140 games and sprinkle $300 worth of skins in a year, but when a AAA company goes all out and take their time to make the most anticipated polished product we know they can make, suddenly $100 is too much? Stop talking.”

It’s safe to say gamers didn’t react well to the take, as one person tweeted: “Bro…such a mid take. Why should I levy the cost of a game dev that takes 10 years and a billion dollars to make a product?

“If they sell it for 60, they’d still make a profit. $100 is ridiculous, and there is no defence for it.”

“It’ll be an issue for lower income people who struggle to even afford AAA games at their current price. It only takes one game at a higher price for the industry to follow,” another replied.
