O’Keeffe also added that the redevelopers built little else on the site around the medieval ruins, and that the courtyard seen today is the actual medieval castle’s courtyard.
The discovery is significant because few medieval castles have survived in south Dublin, as many like it were demolished in the 17th century, with their stonework recycled for use in other residences.
“It was always assumed that the old castle’s luck finally ran out at the end of the 18th century when its then-owner set about modernizing the property,” O’Keeffe said to the Irish news site The Journal. “It was also assumed that, if anything did manage to survive that episode, it certainly could not have survived the building of the Victorian house that we see on campus today.”
But survive is precisely what Roebuck Castle did.
