Bonesho’s argument is built on an irregularity in the Greek spelling. The exact Greek transliteration of the Latin PILATO would be ΠΙΛΑΤΩ, with an omega rather than a final omicron, or O. But, Bonesho argues that, a person with only basic knowledge of Latin, living in a region ruled by the Romans for less than a century, might easily mistake the transliteration and replace the omega with the Greek omicron: ΠΙΛΑΤΟ.
Beyond confirming the ring’s connection to Pontius Pilate, Bonesho contends that her research has shed new light on the daily lives of workers in Judea 2,000 years ago — and proven that it wasn’t just the Romans who were carrying out the area’s administrative work.
“Complexity often gets lost in popular narratives of how things worked at that time,” Bonesho said in a statement. “But understanding the ring gives us more insight into what the Roman administration of early Roman Judea looked like, in terms of how authority was distributed into the lower echelons of the political structure.
