PEOPLE CALL FOR RICKY GERVAIS TO RETURN AS GOLDEN GLOBE HOST
But while we wait to see who this year’s winners are, why don’t we take a trip down memory lane and reflect on some of the viral moments from years gone by.
The biggest moments from the 2024 Golden Globes
Cillian Murphy’s lipstick smear
Cillian Murphy scooped the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture drama award for his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, signalling a tidal wave of wins for the film.
The actor gave a touching speech, but fans were too preoccupied with the lipstick smear on his nose to pay attention.
The smear had ended up on his nose after wife Yvonne McGuinness gave him an excited congratulatory kiss – which is absolutely adorable.
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s impromptu reunion
Ben Affleck surprised his long-term pal Matt Damon during last year’s ceremony, with Affleck spotting his buddy and sneaking over to surprise him – much to Damon’s delight.
The buddies would later present the the Best Director award together. Cute!
Jennifer Lawrence’s exit plan
Jennifer Lawrence had received a best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture nomination for her part in No Hard Feelings – eventually losing out to Emma Stone in Poor Things.
Before Stone’s win Lawrence could be seen mouthing to the camera that she would be heading home should she not get an award, mouthing to camera: “If I don’t win, I’m leaving.”
Lawrence was of course joking and could be seen applauding Stone for her win moments later.
No hard feelings, eh?
Taylor Swift’s death stare
Last year’s host Jo Koy risked the wrath of the Swifties by joking: “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.”
Swift appeared unimpressed by the joke, with cameras capturing a very stoic reaction from the singer.
Koy would later respond by saying he ‘didn’t understand’ the backlash to his quip, saying: “There’s no ill intent in that joke. The joke is about the NFL and how they keep using cutaways to [her].”
Other viral Golden Globe moments
Milly Alcock and Emma D’Arcy’s House of the Dragon acceptance
House of the Dragon picked up an award for Best Television Series in 2023, which appeared to be a surprise to the cast, with Rhaenyra Targaryen actors Milly Alcock and Emma D’Arcy joining director Miguel Sapochnik to collect the award.
“As you can tell, we didn’t think we were going to win so I didn’t get ready,” Sapochnik told the crowd.
This especially appeared to be the case for Alcock who giggled her way through the speech – leading many viewers to wonder if she’d gotten a little tipsy.
The Ricky Gervais years
Gervais has hosted several Golden Globes ceremonies over the past few years, with his most recent appearance coming in 2020,
The comedian made a number of brutal digs at Hollywood’s stars during his time in-front of the mic, including scathing comments about Johnny Depp’s film The Tourist in 2011 as well as jabs directed at James Corden, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mel Gibson and many others.
