The tennis supporter who is being criticised for allegedly snatching a boy’s signed cap at the US Open has been identified by the player.

We’ve only just gotten over the ‘Coldplay couple’ and another viral moment of controversy is appearing on our FYPs.

Polish sports star Kamil Majchrzak picked up a big win against his Russian counterpart and number nine seed Karen Khachanov in a five-set thriller on Thursday (28 August).

After the game, the 29-year-old walked over to Court 11 to do autographs for fans in the stands.

One boy, however, was left crying after a grown man appeared to ruin his day out at the US Open.

In a now-viral clip, Majchrzak takes off his Asics-branded hat and thinks he’s handed it to the young lad as he continues to sign other autographs.

He wasn’t to realise that an adult, who snatches the cap from him, appears to be laughing about it while doing so.

The man ignores the child’s protests and puts the cap in his bag.

Majchrzak only learnt afterwards what had happened, admitting on social media: “After the match I didn’t get to record that my cap didn’t get to the boy.

“Thanks to @asicstennis I’ve got enough caps so I’m prepared for that.”

He added: “Hey guys, could you help me find the kid from my match @usopen @eurosportpl.

“If it’s you (or your parents see this), please send me a DM.”

The heartwarming act was completed when Majchrzak managed to meet with the young fan, named Brock.

“Hello world, together with Brock, we wish you a great day,” he wrote alongside a picture of the pair shared on Instagram.

With the internet trying to hunt down the man who allegedly took the hat, Majchrzak said to the New York Post that he has been identified as Polish CEO, Piotr Szczerek, of paving company Drogbruk.

Spanish outlet MARCA has since reported that he’s deleted his social media accounts after being called a ‘bully’ and ‘thief’ online.

“Obviously it was some kind of confusion,” Majchrzak said, claiming that Szczerek has attempted to make amends with the fan and his family.

“I was pointing, giving the hat, but I had a lot going on after my match, after being super tired and super excited for the win. I just missed it. I had like a dead look if you know what I mean. I’m sure the guy was also acting in the moment of heat, in the moment of emotions.”

“He also wanted to make things right, so I gave him the credentials for Brock’s mom on the same social media I was using to contact her,” Majchrzak explained.

“So, maybe he can make things right himself.”
