During the COVID-19 pandemic, Parton was an active public health advocate, donating yet another $1 million to coronavirus research at Vanderbilt, which helped fund the development of the Moderna vaccine.
Disaster Relief In Sevier County
Beyond contributing to medical research, Parton funded efforts that provided relief to families struggling after natural disasters.
After devastating wildfires tore through Tennessee in 2016, Parton launched the My People Fund, which gave $1,000 per month to all families whose homes were completely destroyed by fire. The fund donated a total of $8.9 million to those in need, helping with payments for rent, utilities, and food.

And when a flood devastated homes in Tennessee in 2021, Parton raised $700,000 to help those impacted by the disaster.
Most recently, in 2024, Hurricane Helene ripped through the southeastern states, causing billions of dollars in damage and taking the lives of hundreds of victims. In response, Parton donated $1 million of her personal funds to the Mountain Ways Foundation, as well as an additional $1 million from her businesses and foundation.
And these are just a small sample of Parton’s good deeds. Some of her acts were only known to the public years later — like when Parton revealed in 2021 that she’d invested some of the royalties she earned from Whitney Houston’s cover of her song “I Will Always Love You” into a commercial complex in a Black neighborhood in Nashville.
It’s no accident that some of Parton’s philanthropy remains unknown. She emphasized that she never did it for attention.
“That’s what we should do as human beings,” Parton said in 2022. “I never quite understood why we have to let religion and politics and things like that stand in the way of just being good human beings. I think it’s important from that standpoint just to feel like you’re doing your part, doing something decent and good and right.”
