The Surprising and Awkward Moment She Realized Her Boyfriend Was the Infamous Fish and Rice Cake Guy
You ever notice how certain moments on British TV just refuse to disappear, no matter how many years pile up? I’m not talking about the history-making stuff — no, I mean those little quirky snippets that somehow worm their way into the national consciousness. Like the legendary ‘sad little life Jane’ from Come Dine With Me, or the chaotic buzz of the 00s X Factor auditions, not to mention Gemma Collins giving us all the drama on Big Brother. And then, of course, there’s Danny Andrews — the unforgettable “Fish and a Rice Cake” guy — whose oddly specific eating ritual turned him into meme royalty overnight. But what happens when viral fame crashes headfirst into real life, especially love? Turns out, even the “Fish and a Rice Cake” man’s girlfriend had no idea she was dating a British telly legend… until some fans made it crystal clear. How do you go from viral mockery to launching your own rice cake business, and unexpectedly finding “the love of your life” along the way? Let’s dive into the bizarre, funny, and surprisingly heartwarming saga of Danny and his not-so-ordinary love story. LEARN MORE
No matter how much time has passed there are some core moments of British telly that have just lived on forever.
I’m not talking big political events or monumental milestones, I’m talking the ‘sad little life Jane’ speech from Come Dine With Me, the 00s X Factor auditions, Gemma Collins on Big Brother and, of course, the Fish and a Rice Cake guy.
Danny Andrews was solidified as a meme at the age of 16 after the 2007 doc, Baby Faced Body Builders, showcased his bizarre eating ritual.
And though he’s obviously gone on to live a whole life since, having ended up taking time off social media, the nickname is still attached to him.
But his girlfriend didn’t quite realise that when they first started going out as she reveals the awkward way she found out.
After initial trolling, Danny went on to embrace his viral fame, appearing on various TV shows and even launching his own rice cake business.
It seems a given after the quote that changed his life went: “Eight o’clock in the morning, I’ll have fish and a rice cake.”
He explained in the viral BBC clip: “At two o’clock, I’ll have fish. At four o’clock – just before I train – I’ll have fish and a rice cake.”
It was his rice cake business that Danny says he wanted to promote by going on Channel 4’s recent dating show, Love Triangle.
But to his surprise, he met ‘the love of his life on there’, in the form of Sadie Bass.
“We’ve been together for eight months now, but we couldn’t go public with our relationship for the first seven months as we had signed an NDA so not to ruin the show,” the 35-year-old explained.

“Things are going along really well though since going public – she’s moving from Bristol to my four-bed house here in Preston to move in with me, after our first holiday to Tenerife in two weeks time, and I can’t wait.”
While Sadie was aware of the Fish and a Rice Cake meme as she and her friends ‘would quote it all the time and laugh about it’, she didn’t realise it was actually Danny.
The 29-year-old revealed: “I didn’t know until some guys ran up to us asking him for pictures.
“I was confused, I was thinking he was some big celebrity. He awkwardly told me he was the fish and rice cake man – I thought it was hilarious.”
Danny was relieved she didn’t ‘judge’ him or find it ‘cringey’ and that they were already ‘fully together’ by the time she realised.

“I am dating a legend, he is British meme royalty,” Sadie added. The viral star admitted that he’s learned to deal with these situations better now too as he explained: “It’s not too bad getting recognised now. At the start when it first came out, I’d say 80% of the comment on social media were negative and that’s why I came off those platforms.
“But since embracing it, I’d say 80% of my interactions are positive. But even if you were Mother Teresa you’d still get bad comments.”
