Alexa, why are you repeating yourself?
That’s probably a question the voice actor behind Amazon‘s iconic web service has considered asking at some point, but she’s now revealed what happens when she tries to ask the technology a question, before hearing herself explain it back to her.
Susan Caplin is the face behind the voice of Alexa, and she was once interviewed about her role as one of the most listened to voices in the world, with the Amazon assistant exploding in popularity and use in recent years.
Perhaps we should have been wary back then about how easily AI would take over our lives, when we suddenly started asking a virtual assistant to play our favourite songs or turn the lights down instead of doing it ourselves.
Most of us find it far easier than Caplin when it comes to conversing with the technology, as in a video with Mike Wiest, she showed off what happens when she does try to use her own Alexa.
She says: “Alexa, play my favourite playlist.”
The device then replies: “You sound familiar, who is this?”
The two then joke with each other about who the real Alexa actually is, before the technology even jinxes her and offers to buy her a Coke, ordering a six-pack to her house. Which was no doubt ordered from Amazon to put more money in Jeff Bezos‘ pocket.

Caplin revealed that she actually gets stopped fairly regularly when people hear her voice, and she sometimes says yes but other times will say no, depending on how she is feeling that day.
She added: “Other than having a famous voice, my life is pretty average. I go to the movies, pick up the dry cleaning, clean the house. Nothing really exciting. I do love gardening in the yard and walking my dog, that’s about it.”
While the reliance on technology such as this was all fun and exciting when it first launched, Amazon also announced this week that 14,000 corporate workers would be axed in favour of AI, which marks yet another incredibly worrying step in the world of artificial intelligence.
Amazon’s senior vice president of people experience and technology, Beth Galetti, wrote: “Some may ask why we’re reducing roles when the company is performing well.
“What we need to remember is that the world is changing quickly. This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the Internet, and it’s enabling companies to innovate much faster than ever before.”
So while Alexa’s job might be safe as the voice of the AI, yours might not be, with Microsoft recently revealing the long list of jobs which are thought to be most at risk as tech continues to dominate our lives.
