My parents were super controlling up until high school, I was barely allowed over to friend’s houses and I wasn’t allowed to stay home by myself until like 7th or 8th grade (I would sit at my dad’s work until he got off work until then).

In high school they stepped off a bit because I did theatre and had to stay at the school after hours a lot so that helped me get some freedom.

I’m in college now and I still live with them, I’m basically free to do what I want, although my mom does want to know exactly what time my classes are but I consider that pretty fair since she’s paying for them and me and her have to share a car right now since my truck broke down.

Still though, the lack of a lot of freedoms from when I was a child lead to a habit of lying about basically everything that I still continue to this day. Unless it’s something I explicitly know I’m okay with telling my parents I construct some lie about it. I also have a complete lack of trust in either of them since they pulled the “you won’t get in trouble if you tell us the truth” thing that ended with me getting in trouble either being yelled at or hit (which they claim they never hit me but I have some very bad memories of exactly that happening).

After I move out I’ll probably go low contact but it’s for more than just what I’ve said here.

So, I’m the middle brother between two very outgoing and quite rebellious brothers.

My older brother asserted his independence hard, so naturally, my parents clamped down hard on me. Because I was more reserved, that made it easier for them.
