The eternal Rebel Without A Cause lost his life in a tragic car crash at the age of 24 in 1955.
He was traveling to a sports car racing competition when he was involved in a car crash at the junction of the then-U.S. Route 466 and SR 41. The 550 Spyder he was driving collided with a Ford Tudor sedan near Cholame, California.
The Ford vehicle, driven by 23-year-old student Donald Turnupseed, was turning at an intersection when the two cars collided. The student reportedly said he did not see the Spyder until after he was turning left onto SR 41. James had been ticketed for speeding two hours before the crash.
Approximately 600 mourners were in attendance at the young actor’s funeral, with another 2,400 fans gathered outside the Fairmount Friends Church in Indiana during the procession.
