A new Netflix true crime doc looking into the death of YouTuber Gabby Petito features a moment in which her friends reveal why they felt her fiancé had a ‘dark side’.
Petito – who had been vlogging their ‘van life’ travelling journey – went missing in August of 2021, with her fiancé Brian Laundrie returning from their planned trip early.
Laundrie returned to his parents’ home in Florida, refusing to engage with police when an investigation began into Petito’s disappearance.
Laundrie disappeared shortly after a warrant was issued for his arrest, with his body later discovered. Laundrie had took his own life, and in a journal entry he confessed to killing his fiancée.
Petito’s remains were later found in a National Forest in Wyoming.
Petito’s death is the focus of Netflix’s American Murder: Gabby Petito, a brand-new true crime doc which features interviews with family and friends of the vlogger.
Some of her friends said that they felt things were off between the pair prior to their ultimately fatal journey across America.
One friend said: “It felt like a parent was watching us on a play date, it was very weird but he was very nice.
“I do remember coming home and telling my mum, she said, ‘Oh was it it?’ and I said, ‘He’s a really nice guy but I feel like there’s something off about him.
“That started becoming clearer and clearer as our friendship progressed, there was a really dark side of him.”
After killing Gabby, Laundrie tried to cover his tracks, texting her mum from her phone and trying to establish his own alibi.

The case is detailed in a new Netflix doc (Netflix)
Loretta Bush, an FBI special agent, said of Laundrie’s attempts to cover things up: “He stops at multiple gas stations.
“Through credit card records, we know that he uses Gabby’s debit card to pay for gas.
“Also, on the trip there is a Zelle transaction from Gabby to Brian that says “Goodbye Brian, I’ll never ask you for anything again.” He then transferred $700 dollars from her account to his.
She went on to say: “We know that Gabby was deceased, and Brian was using multiple devices to send this to himself.
“What this did was send him from going to being a missing person to making him a federal fugitive.”

Another FBI agent speaking in the doc said: “As Brian is hiking, text messages are being sent to Gabby’s phone which was back at the Spread Creek area.
“Text messages to Gabby’s phone are not read until Brian gets back to the Spread Creek area, where Gabby’s phone was left.
“The activity between the two phones was almost instantaneous.
“Brian was holding both phones and talking directly to himself. It was apparent that he was trying to create an alibi.”
American Murder: Gabby Petito is streaming on Netflix now.
