I’m diving into the 12 toxic products that surely don’t belong in your bathroom cabinet. Sharing is caring!

We are all in the same boat when it comes to being attracted by flashy packaging or catchy slogans while we’re just trying to pick up some shampoo or toilet cleaner at the grocery store (who knew there were so many options?). But, the real key to deciding is to be informed of the ingredients in those products.

It may seem like a tedious task, but it is worth paying attention to what we’re exposing ourselves to, knowingly or unknowingly. Let’s look at the 12 toxic products that you should keep away from your bathroom cabinet.

1. Antibacterial Deodorants

Nobody wants to be the stinky coworker at the office, but be careful how you prevent that. Most of the antibacterial deodorants on the market contain triclosan, which doctors consider quite harmful to our well-being.

Some studies show that triclosan can disrupt the endocrine system and may increase the risk of allergies in children. Previously, it was used as a powerful antimicrobial, but now it is used to develop antibiotic-resistant bacteria, known as superbugs. In addition, these deodorants often include synthetic fragrances that can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.

2. Hair Gels

Here’s one for the boys! If you frequently use hair gels, you may need to pause and read the ingredients first.

Some hair smoothing products (aka hair gel) contain formaldehyde, which is a known human carcinogen that causes health issues like respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and cancer.

3. Conventional Shampoos

Many conventional shampoos contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and parabens, which can be harsh on the hair and scalp. SLS is a surfactant that helps create lather but can strip natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Parabens are preservatives that prevent bacterial growth but have been linked to potential health concerns.

Choosing organic, sulfate-free shampoos can be a healthier alternative. These products are formulated without harsh chemicals, making them gentler on your hair and scalp.

4. Shaving Creams

Other toxic products you probably have in your bathroom cabinet are shaving creams or gels. They usually contain Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), the same non-stick coating used in cookware. PTFE is used to improve the texture and coverage of shaving gels, but it’s a chemical that causes health problems like hypertension and cancer.

In addition, these products may also contain compounds like triethanolamine (TEA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), both of which have been associated with allergic reactions and potential carcinogenic effects.

5. Hair Dyes

With the widespread use of hair dyes, it’s important to recognize the harm these seemingly innocent products can cause. Hair dyes mostly contain harsh chemicals like ammonia, parabens, and P-phenylenediamine (PPD), which can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and even increase cancer risk.

These toxic ingredients can also lead to brittle, damaged hair over time. In addition, hair dye runoff can contribute to water pollution, harming aquatic life. The best way to color your hair is to use hair dyes that are labeled as natural or organic, like henna or indigo.

6. Mineral Foundations

Love that shimmery glow on your face after applying foundation? That’s because of a substance called mica

Although it is harmless itself, when it is mixed with substances like asbestos, lead, and arsenic, it has negative effects when inhaled. Make sure you don’t keep products in a closed environment like bathrooms so that you don’t have to inhale them as much.

7. Hair Conditioners

Most people are frequent users of hair conditioners, which make their hair smooth and silky. The reason behind this is a substance called Quaternium-15,which enhances hair texture and manageability.

However, research says it emits formaldehyde that can cause allergic reactions, such as dermatitis. To minimize these risks, read the ingredients list beforehand.

8. Mold Cleaners

Almost every commercial mold cleaner in the stores has strong chemicals like bleach, ammonia, or hydrochloric acid to kill the mold spores.

Inhaling its fumes can cause respiratory issues like wheezing and difficulty breathing, especially for people with asthma.

9. Air Fresheners

Although air fresheners make your bathroom smell pleasant, they contain harmful chemicals like volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and phthalates, which can cause dizziness and nausea or even disrupt the endocrine system.

Try looking for natural alternatives made with ingredients like vinegar and citrus fruits. You can also opt for essential oils.

10. Toilet Cleaners

We can’t ignore the importance of toilet cleaners for keeping the toilet neat and tidy, but they contain harsh chemicals that can eventually lead to health problems.

Most of them contain hydrochloric acid, which can cause severe burns and damage to plumbing. Bleach and ammonia can also irritate the respiratory system by emitting toxic fumes.

11. Shower Curtains

They may look harmless to you, and it’s surprising they’re on the list, but there are some concerns related to shower curtains.

Most options on the market are made from vinyl, which can release harmful chemicals like phthalates and vinyl chloride. Others are made from PVC, which emits phthalates and dioxins, which are also harmful to your health.

12. Toothpaste

Some toothpastes may contain triclosan, an antibacterial agent, and artificial colors, which raise concerns about their long-term effects on health and the environment.

Triclosan has been linked to potential hormonal disruptions and the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. At the same time, artificial colors often serve no functional purpose and may cause allergic reactions in some individuals.

A better option is to choose natural toothpastes that contain fluoride. Fluoride is effective in preventing cavities and strengthening tooth enamel but is free from harmful dyes and additives.
