My favorite was when we were interviewing for a soils tech position (requires basic math and instruction following) my manager made up a simple test to check basic math and instruction following.

I told my manager to add one question to the end: “How many grams are in an ounce”. One potential employee missed basic math questions like 4 x 5, but put in 28.35 grams per ounce.

Street knowledge.

Two cases in phone interviews.

First was the person who, near the end if the interview when asked if he had any questions about us, asked us what company he was interviewing with. The entire interview was of that caliber. I believe we were eventually told that some of his supposed skills were actually held by the person he sat next to, but that proximity somehow made it worth putting on his resume.

The second was the person who couldn’t admit to not knowing things, and instead tried to Google them during the interview. As if a 60 second pause followed by something clearly bein read wasn’t bad enough, the responses to follow-up questions asking for details were just a joke.
