One time when I was like 13 I was watching a movie where someone found out their dad wasn’t their real dad or something. And I commented about how I would like to know something like that so I could make an educated decision on if I wanted to contact them. My parents got REALLY weird about it.
So anyways when I was 20 I found out that my dad wasn’t my real dad.
I went to a psychic about 14 years ago and walked away feeling let down because all she did was talk about my brother. I’m an only child. 4 years later my mom called me frantically in the middle of the night. A man had posted a picture of his dad in a local FB group. He’d never met him and only knew his first name. It was MY dad.
I had a brother.
When I was in 1st grade my dad got really into bike riding. He rode bikes with my brother and I everywhere. To and from school, to near by restaurants, the gas station. We were always out and about. Dear Reader, my dad had a DUI. Homie was only allowed to ride a bike.
Our grandmother used to keep guinea pigs for all the grandkids. It got too much for her so we were informed they’d “gone to live on a farm”. Being cynical teens, we rolled our eyes because we *knew* that was a euphemism for having them put to sleep.
Anyway, at least ten years later it came up in conversation and it was mentioned that we *knew* what really happened. My mum looked at me and said “they actually DID go to a farm.”
My child’s teacher suggesting he get an autism assessment. She typed out a letter with a full page list of behavior observations. I read through them thinking nothing sounded odd at all, thinking to myself “I remember doing ALL these things as a kid, heck I’m nearly 40 and I STILL do half this stuff!” Then it dawned on me…
One day my mom left my older sister to watch me and my brothers. My sister and I bumped heads amd started fighting and arguing. She said to me “that’s why you were adopted” I just thought she was poking fun cause I always felt like the black sheep of the family. I brought it up to my mom and dad, and they sat me down and admitted it. I was so sad, in this conversation of explaining I was adopted, she also let me know so was my sister I was fighting with.
When I was 6 I won a chick at the carnival. Dad built a coop and I took care of Melvin for about a year before he just wasn’t there one morning.
I was so heartbroken that my grandma made my favorite dinner to cheer me up.
Shoyu chicken.
I had to get a replacement social security card when I was 28. I got a receipt and in the space for my parents names, my sister was listed as my mom and someone I had never heard of was listed as my dad. I went back to the window to point out the mistake and the woman said they could correct it with my birth certificate. I forgot about it until months later my mom came to visit and told me she adopted me and is biologically my maternal grandmother. My “sister” is my bio mom.
Always thought I was bi, but was too afraid of women to do anything about it. Also, I always hated kissing. Thought it was weird and pointless. Well, at 38 years old I kissed a woman and realized that men were the problem all along.
In the Philippines, most of us have nannies, and when I was a kid (in the ’90s) our nannies would get all dolled up and take each other’s photos at our garden. They’d always do this while the adults of the family were out.
I thought it was just them having fun but it turns out they were posing for their mail order bride photos. One of them actually pulled it off and is now overseas with a white dude.
While I was growing up, my grandfather was always eager to write in his journal. Little me thought it was just a diary about his day to day life. He was always the type eager to get into deep conversations and bond too. Before he [passed away], he told everyone to read it once he was gone. Turned out, it was 40 years of daily entries that weren’t about his day at all. It was him outing every secret and gossip that had ever been confided to him from all of the various family members.
My two older brothers and I were in high school at the same time. I played sports, did well in school, funny – no boys came near me. Friend zone. Platonic. I was tall and just assumed that must be it. Years later at a bar a guy approached me and said ‘man I had the biggest crush on you in high school’, but your brothers told me they would kick [me]!’ What!? All that time I thought I was just …not….
When I was 10 my aunt decided to take my brothers and me to Disneyland. It was all very last minute and unorganized. We stayed in a hotel nowhere near Disneyland and a friend of hers came with us. A few days after we came back, my parents told us they were divorcing. It wasn’t until 20 years later I even realized my dad was moving out while I was on a space mountain. My aunt had a trip planned to newport beach and decided to make it a Disney trip to save us having to be home for that.
I always had stomach aches and just didn’t feel well in general. My parents decided I must be lactose intolerant. Spent my childhood/teenage years/early 20s either avoiding dairy or spending $$$ on lactaid pills. There was no mention of the fact that I STILL didn’t feel well. So one day my husband was like “you know this is [nonsense] right and you’re not lactose intolerant?” He took me to Dairy Queen and got me a giant milkshake and…. I was fine. Turns out I just had anxiety and depression.
When I was a kid, we would have these women stay at our house sometimes. They were so kind, and would do my hair and let me play with their extensive makeup collections. I remember having braids and curls and loving the dress up parties! I thought it was completely normal! Just cool older sister types hanging out. Turns out, the nonprofit my parents worked for helped women escape [illegal] work if they weren’t there willingly… and they would sometimes stay with us until they had somewhere safe to go.
I was fat my whole life and kinda just internalized that no man was going to be attracted to me because of it. I lost weight and that kinda burst the bubble – and I realized HOW MANY MEN had hit on me throughout the years, including men I had desperate crushes on. I literally didn’t notice in the moment and it hit me years later.
I was reminiscing a while ago with a friend about 4th grade.
Me: haha those classmates of ours were such jokesters. Do you remember how they always laughed at our jokes?
BFF: Jaz… they were laughing AT us not WITH us… We were being bullied
Me: *surprised pikachu face*.
House party, 24 years ago. I’m pouring a glass of wine. A hot girl (friend of a friend) walks over to me, holds out her empty glass & said – red wine always makes me think of [intimacy]. Thinking it was just conversation, I said – it makes me think of cheese. Many years later I bumped into her, we got talking & she asked me why I didn’t shoot my shot that night.
I hung out with my grandfather a lot- because he was a lot of fun. Once, in my 20s (late 1980s) he told me a story about how he hid some jewels in a beach cave. After he passed away in 2011, I found out he orchestrated one of the biggest jewel heists in the history of Los Angeles at one of America’s most famous TV homes- The Beverly Hillbillies House. I’ve written about it & him for Town & Country, Vanity Fair and NYT.
I grew up very sheltered in purity culture in the 90s. In 1999 in college a girl asked to use my computer. I clocked it as weird because the computer lab had faster connections. She said it was fine. We get to my dorm room and chat but she’s not making a move to use my computer. She looks at me with an odd look and everything goes silent. I feel awkward and point her to my PC. She then says she actually needs to go. YEARS later I realize SHE DID NOT WANT TO USE MY COMPUTER!
One time in my 30s, i went to work and casually mentioned to my coworker that i’d had a hard time sleeping the night before. i explained it was because my husband was away, so my morning routine was different with the kids and i had to take a different train. she looked at me blankly, so i was like, you know how sometimes it’s hard to sleep because you’re worrying about the plan for the next day? she did not. that’s how i learned i had a generalized anxiety disorder.
I was 48 years old when I realized that what I thought was just me being disorganized and lazy my while life was actually ADHD…
My grandparents were pretty poor. They lived in a tiny town where they had a huge garden, had bee hives, and they raised rabbits. They always canned their vegetables for the winter and we always had fried chicken. When I was 27 I was talking to my older sisters about how awesome it was they had rabbits bc I loved playing with the baby bunnies. They said “that’s the fried chicken you were eating. They raised the rabbits to eat.” I was speechless.
When I was growing up, we moved every 6 months to 2 yrs. We never stayed anywhere long, I couldn’t have my picture taken, I couldn’t go on field trips or be in clubs or anything. Turns out my grandma that “adopted me”, actually kidnapped me and kept running with me anytime my family got close to finding me. I thought we were just going on an adventure/she was a free spirit type of person.
I remember going to a lot of basketball games when I was very little (4-5 years old). TURNS OUT THEY WERE COURTSIDE DALLAS MAVERICKS SEATS IN ‘95 BECAUSE MY AUNT WAS MARRIED TO THE OWNER.
When I was 18, I overheard my mom talking with her sister. She said “yeah, and when Julie’s twin…” Stopped in my tracks. I took a few steps backwards to make eye contact & said “I’m sorry, what?” She looked at me blankly and I said “what do you mean “Julie’s twin?” She said “yeah, your twin that I lost in pregnancy. You remember.” MOM, DOES THIS LOOK LIKE THE FACE OF SOMEONE WHO KNEW SHE WAS A TWIN OR THE FACE OF SOMEONE WHO IS JUST LEARNING THIS INFORMATION? Anyways.I’m this lady.
I use to get bullied in school about being African. They would ask stupid questions like “did you live in a tree or a hut?” And my lil innocent self would happily explain to them that we had a house with a compound and described how big the compound was, our animals, mango trees, etc.
As an adult, I realize they were trying to poke fun.
One of my earliest memories was being woken up late at night, being placed in a car and being told to “go back to sleep.” I’d wake up in the backseat of a car, dark outside, under streetlights in a parking lot. Apartment building outside. Couple this with memories of helping my dad move out of our house, and then visiting him in “the barracks,” then finding out my dad had an affair…My mom was getting me up to park outside his spot to watch [him].
I just found out that apparently you DON’T have to be quiet to go fishing. Fish can’t really hear! So all my uncles and cousins, my brother and grandpa, all liars! It’s a giant conspiracy! They just wanted us to stop talking!!! I called my mom immediately and she was like wait WHAT.
My aunt had a secret baby that she confessed to her son on her deathbed. No one knew but her and my grandparents. So my mom and all her sisters found out the day of her funeral. She also maintained a relationship with him throughout his adult life, unbeknownst to anyone in her family. He’s now officially a part of our family and we are thrilled but WOW.
I fell in love with a boy at summer camp when I was 12, and I thought he didn’t want to date me because I was fat.
20+ years later, he was involved in producing a Broadway play about plus-sized women.
As a friend said, “there’s signs from the universe, and then there’s the universe beating you over the head”.
A few years into being a special education teacher, I realized that I was in special education in elementary school.
When I was in fifth grade, my dad and his “business partner” opened a men’s clothing store that went “out of business” within a year. I found out fairly recently that the partner was actually my dad’s bookie, and that the store closed because they staged a robbery to commit insurance fraud.
I once watched a doll on my grandmother’s mantle stand up, dance, and gesture like it was speaking to me. I was six or seven and never told anyone.
All my life I’d periodically remember it and try to convince myself it was a dream or hallucination, but knew it wasn’t.
Then In my 20’s, my mom casually mentioned grandma’s dancing doll. The one she got on a trip, with joints carved in it so any stiff breeze would make it hula dance.
I was 55yo when I finally introduced my parents to my best friend of 28 yrs (we live in a different city to them). After lunch my mother said “I see why you 2 are so close, you’ve got the same energy & similar personalities.”
Then in the next breath she said “He was a lovely host but I don’t want to meet him again. His vibe was too intense for me. I don’t like that sort of person”.
So that’s how I finally understood why my mother hated me for my whole life, when I never did anything wrong.
When I was 25 my mom and I were watching one of the TLC medical programs (which just very much dated me, because yes, there used to actually be learning involved!). Anyway, it was talking about twin-to-twin transfer syndrome, and my mom just casually said, “Oh, I think that’s what you had.” Which is how I learned I was a twin, and [ended] my twin in the womb, after living a quarter of a century not knowing it.
When I was a kid, everyone had to be in choir in our school. The choir teacher took me and a couple of other kids aside one day and said we were doing great, but we were singing a little too loud and she was going to teach us how to control that. She had us put our hands on our throats and sing quieter and quieter until we couldn’t feel any vibrations. When I was in my twenties I was like “HEY!!!!!!”
I used to think skunks were a lot more prevalent than they actually are.
When I was like 30 I found out — nope, that was my parents little evening ritual. Still is and they are like 75.
When I was younger, I remember hearing teachers saying I was “artistic.”
Autistic. They were saying autistic.
This is my favorite story ever. When my daughter was four, she was reading a book out loud, sounding out the words as she went. She read, “The ra-bit went down the…wait a minute…” She took a second to think and then said, incredulously, “It’s rabbit?! I thought it was RAVVIT my whole life!” Cutest and funniest four year old revelation ever.
I worked for Elizabeth Holmes for three months and left the job as soon as I could since the whole office had a weird vibe and the lab was always empty. For years after that I’d see her get accolades and cover stories. I questioned whether I’d done the right thing by leaving. Anyway. She’s in jail now.
I met my first husband when I was 10 and he was 35. He was my best friend’s dad. He was a pseudo-father-figure for 8 years, love-bombed me when I turned 18 and ran away from home, and then I was married to him for almost ten years. He kicked me out when he was trying the same tactic with someone seven years younger than me. After he filed for divorce, I got my own lawyer and told the story. She was like “yeah, um… so your husband is a predator.” I was the last one to know!
About 33 years after it happened, I found out little boys don’t constantly think about wanting to be a girl. That was a plot twist for *several* people.
I just got my driver’s permit (15). My big brother & his wife let me drive to the city to shop w/ them. On the way home (1.5hrs) they laid in the back of the minivan, making an ad hoc wall with shoe and clothing boxes so I couldnt see anything.
and after while the van started to shake/rock while I was driving….
I yelled out in alarm but my brother, from behind the boxes just said “Its OK KEEP DRIVING!”
So I did…. and didnt figure out what caused the rocking until some years later.
When my parents told a 10-year-old me that my hamster was sick and had to go live on a farm, I spent years picturing him running through the grass and being worried about him getting trampled by a horse.
When I tell you I was THIRTY years old when it hit me …
When I was 9 my mother was rushed hemorrhaging, to the hospital in the middle of the night.
No one talked about it.
50 years later I learned she’d had an illegal abortion.
When I realized the difference between my parents wedding anniversary and my birthday was 6 months.
I was 15 when my parents divorced. One night, I found a typed letter on my mom’s computer begging him to stay. My dad genuinely made me believe the divorce was ultimately my mom’s fault.
14 years later, I learned my dad had actually cheated on my mom. Multiple times.
When I was three, my parents moved 1800 miles away. I thought it was just for a better job (and that was true).
But when I was 47 (and then again at 49), my father revealed, in a very strongly worded way, that we had moved in order to get away from the racism in my parents’ families.
They didn’t want my brother and I to grow up thinking that same way.
My parents had an old mirror under their bed that I loved to look at it because it was pretty. Every once in a while it would get hella dusty so I would scrub it clean. As an adult I was talking to my wife and mom about it cuz I wanted to hang it in my new house. I told my mom how I admired it and cleaned it as a kid. Once a yr, when all of the kids were away, my parents would do [illegal substances] off that mirror and every time they used it they were confused ah how it was so clean.
I watched Garfield and Friends as a kid on its first run. I was over 40 when it hit me that the duck was named Wade because he couldn’t swim.
I grew up hating French toast so much and it’s because I remember it always being so soggy. So one day I was talking to my mom about it and was like “sorry to say but I never liked your French toast, it was mushy.” And she said “…that’s because I let you put your own syrup on it when you were little… you drowned it.”. Thanks, me.
Christmas Eve, I was 4, my brother was 9. All 4 of us went a Christmas party. When we got home, ALL THE PRESENTS WERE UNDER THE TREE & THE STOCKINGS STUFFED.
How did the presents get there, when we were all out? Our little world was shooketh! Santa IS real!
One day as adults, we asked: Wait, how did you all do that?
They had our babysitters (sisters) come over while we were all at the party & put the presents out!
