Marcin Wiśniewski was on a regular sweep of a forest near Gdańsk, Poland when his metal detector hit upon something. When he realized what he found, he cried tears of joy.
In the sandy soil, a magnificent, well-preserved bronze sword stood upright, as if waiting for someone like Wiśniewski to find it. After realizing the importance of what he’d just found, he covered the site and called the authorities so that they could properly excavate the artifact.

The Pomeranian Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments, the Gdańsk Forest District, and the local forestry service soon arrived at the site. In a statement, the Pomeranian Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments commended Wiśniewski for not moving the artifact, as its exact position is crucial to understanding its history. In this case in particular, the upright position makes this a rather rare find for such an ancient object and it was important to preserve this when analyzing the artifact.
Furthermore, although no other artifacts were found beneath the sword, adjusting the sword’s position could have altered the location of other ancient objects buried nearby as well.

Archaeologists dated the sword to between 900 B.C.E. and 700 B.C.E., the final centuries of the Bronze Age, which accounts for the bronze sword’s excellent metalworking and craftsmanship.
The sword is around two feet long, and has remained incredibly well preserved with a protective layer of green patina, the result of the bronze oxidizing over the course of many years.
The sword also seems to be tang-hilted, meaning the metal of the sword narrows at the base, and was likely connected to some sort of handle made from wood or bone. But after some 2,700 years, the handle has long since decayed.

How This Discovery Deepens Historians’ Knowledge Of Life In Ancient Pomerania
Researchers emphasized that this discovery adds to an understanding of life in the northern Polish region of Pomerania during the Bronze Age.
According to the Polish authorities, this is not the first discovery made in what is now the Gdańsk Forest District. In the 1920s, two bronze antenna swords — weapons with a pair of curved hilts that resemble insect antennae — were found in a bog in Rynarzewo, south of Gdańsk. These swords were dated back to roughly the same period.
The two swords were transferred and kept in the Provincial Museum in Gdańsk for 20 years, but then were lost during World War II, which makes this recent find all the more important.
According to Poland’s State Forests, the bronze sword would have been very valuable at the time of its production, its value likely equaling that of an entire cattle herd.
The upright position of the sword also suggests to archaeologists that it was intentionally placed in its position, rather than tossed aside. This points to the sword being a part of a possible Bronze Age burial ritual or sacrificial offering.
