The initiative was so successful that the dropout rate declined from 35 percent to a mere 6 percent among the two classes, per the Dollywood Foundation.

In 1989, Parton also offered a $500 scholarship to every high school student in the county who wanted to attend the local Hiwassee College. Then, in 2000, a $15,000 college scholarship was established in Parton’s name by her foundation and awarded to five graduating seniors each year.
Parton’s philanthropy expanded beyond students in her hometown when, in 2022, the Dollywood theme park announced that the company would cover all tuition, fees, and textbook costs for any employee who wished to further their education.

In addition to children’s literacy, Parton was passionate about contributing to advancements in health and medicine.
