Hidden for Centuries: Mysterious Roman Temple of the God of War Unearthed in Central Germany's Mountain Forests

These recent excavations may also give insight into life in the region during the decline of the Roman Empire and its Limes system in the mid-third century C.E.

Although Kapersburg began to cease its military operations around that time, archaeologists found artifacts that suggest the settlement saw use even after the Roman soldiers left.

Archaeologists discovered a brooch as well as pieces of pottery that date to Late Antiquity in the centuries following the fall of Rome.

Researchers are tentatively associating these artifacts with the Alemannic groups that once lived in the region, but more study must be done to determine who may have occupied this historic site after the Romans left some 1,800 years ago.
