Imagine finding a family’s home videos from the 1950s in your new house.
That’s the somewhat unsettling situation TikTok creator @saraheposts finds herself in after a relative dug out an old VHS tape while mooching through some cabinets before she moved in.
Opening up about this discovery in her ‘haunted’ Maine residence, she told her social media followers in a recent video: “I promised that I would show the creepiest thing in this house and I’ll clarify that that does not include the attic.
“The attic is a whole separate video when I feel like going up there — it’s in great condition for being 240 years old but there is a tiny room in the attic; there’s signatures on the walls, there’s a coat hanger up there, don’t even get me started. I’m not going up there today.”
But what she was happy to reveal was the unearthing of said ‘completely scary’ VHS, which belonged to the family of a ‘relatively famous politician’ in the US.
Stationed in the ‘butler’s pantry’, Sarah continued: “Right before we moved in (but we’d bought the house,) my little brother was walking the house for us; opened the cabinet and found a VHS tape.
“If you’ve ever seen the movie Sinister: if you find a VHS tape in your new home, you don’t watch it! You don’t watch it. So I’m not going to, but I will read the label on this for you.
“It says: ‘1953 to 1957, scenes from home’. This house was the childhood home of a relatively famous politician and so it would probably be an interesting tape to watch, but it’s never gonna happen. It’s neeeever gonna happen! I’ll probably burn it some day.”
Incase you’ve never seen Sinister, which was directed by Scott Derrickson and released in 2012, the story concerns true-crime author Ellison Oswalt (played by Ethan Hawke) and his discovery of snuff films in his new gaff.
The footage consists of otherworldly events and gruesome murders, and by watching them, his family becomes endangered.
Sinister is considered a cult classic of the horror genre and spawned a sequel three years later.

Per Sarah’s insistence that she’d never switch on the tape, her TikTok fans offered to take up the mantle themselves.
“Nothing would stop me from watching that tape,” someone commented, before another echoed: “Mail it to me. I’ll watch it and send u the cliff notes.”
A third user suggested she simply upload the footage to an AI tool and allow it to summarise everything on the tape.
Sadly though, there could be something amiss with the whole thing, because VHS as a format only arrived in 1976 via the JVC company.
