Matthew McConaughey Reveals Surprising Demands That Could Decide His True Detective Comeback

Having reportedly been ‘open’ to a return, Matthew McConaughey has admitted what it would take for him to go back to True Detective.
The Interstellar actor starred in the drama series’ first season, appearing alongside pal Woody Harrelson as detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Harty.
Of course, season one of True Detective is widely regarded as pretty much one of the best seasons in TV history.
So it’s unsurprising that plenty of fans would love to see more of it. Creator Nic Pizzolatto actually gave them a bit of hope on that last year when he said on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast that he’s got an idea for Rust and Marty.
And on today’s episode of Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz, McConaughey gave strict conditions for returning.

The host asked the actor ‘how seriously’ he and Harrelson are considering it.
“He’s [Pizzolatto] going to talk about it, and he’s got ideas and we’ve talked about a few,” McConaughey said.
“And if he wants to go get his head, heart and spirit in the place to put something down – ‘cos he went to a place when he wrote True Detective.
“And that was on another frequency and had such clear identity, that was special.”
But the star pointed out that he’s famously not ‘the biggest fan of doing sequels’ and has avoided them previously.
“If the first one worked really well, then that second one better be its own thing,” he explained, adding that there has to be a discussion of ‘different characters’ and who ‘you bring back’.
So, it seems that for McConaughey to return to True Detective, not only would it need to be ‘its own thing’ compared to his original season, but Pizzolatto’s really got to have gotten his ‘head, heart and spirit’ in it.
Speaking about it last year, the creator had said: “I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that — who knows? — maybe we’ll do it one day.
“It’s character-based again. … But it’s not something I’ve written or anything. It’s just, I had that in my head. And we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to it. It’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”
The creator ‘walked away’ from his contact with the show in 2019, with the fourth season True Detective: Night Country created by Issa Lopez and starring Jodie Foster.

“I believe if I had given them a good script for another season of True Detective, I believe they would have gone for it,” he explained.
But Pizzolatto said he had become ‘spiritually tired’ of being in so much darkness in creating it.
“And dealing with such dark materials,” he continued.
“And then I got full custody of my daughter back and that was a situation where I really needed to be a father… and I had to step away from a lot of work in 2020.”
A fifth season of the HBO show is said to be in development, with Lopez returning but hey, let’s keep our fingers crossed for a McConaughey return.
