Netflix’s latest true crime documentary, Death of the Pastor’s Wife, has thrown the story of pastor John-Paul ‘JP’ Miller and his former wife Mica back in the spotlight over two years on from her tragic death.
Mica died of suicide shortly after serving her husband JP with divorce papers, and JP went on to marry Suzie Skinner a year after his wife’s death.
The Netflix docuseries outlines how Suzie and JP were accused of having an affair whilst Mica was married to JP, though they both deny this.
It’s also highlighted how Suzie’s husband, Christopher, himself also died in 2021, with his family alleging that this came shortly after he discovered the details of her alleged affair with JP.
Suzie and JP have never been charged in connection with his death, and criminal charges were ruled out after the investigation was reopened.
While this is mentioned in the documentary, Christopher’s family expressed their anger that JP was called and arrived at the scene of his death before they did.

Christopher died in 2021 of ‘accidental drowning’
Suzie was his physical therapist, with the pair eventually marrying in 2004. She gave birth to twins in 2007.
The veteran was wheelchair-bound, and was a ‘complete C5-C6 quadriplegic paralyzed from the chest level down’, according to his own website.
He was found unresponsive in a swimming pool in September of 2021, with the cause of death being ruled as ‘asphyxiation due to drowning’ and as accidental.
Surveillance footage of the pool showed his wheelchair coming to a stop at the edge of the pool before accelerating into the water, but no probable cause was found for criminal charges.

Chris’ sister claims that he confronted Suzie about her relationship with JP, and hinted that he discovered their alleged affair
Chris’ sister Tamra says in the doc: “The last three or four months of his life, he started telling me he didn’t like that pastor and that he wanted to stop attending the church and to find a new church, but Suzie didn’t want to stop attending.
“She would go without him.”
She also claims that he discovered ‘information that devastated him’ which made her believe that the death was intentional, implied to be that he discovered their alleged affair.
JP, however, claims that there was no affair and they never started dating until well after both Mica and Christopher had passed away in early 2025. They married in June of 2025, making Suzie JP’s third wife.

Chris’ sister released a blistering statement
At the time of the re-opening of the investigation into his death, which found no cause for criminal charges, Tamra released a statement on behalf of her brother’s family. She said: “My parents and I have fully complied with the ongoing re-investigation into the death of my brother, Chris Skinner.
“Over the past year, speculation surrounding his passing has grown, prompting many to question the circumstances. This scrutiny stems from concerns about an individual who was called to and present at the scene of Chris’s death by his former spouse. This individual is now under an alleged FBI investigation.
“The heightened attention regarding Chris’ manner of death is a direct result of his former spouse’s continued association with this person, a relationship that she has recently and publicly acknowledged as more personal in a recent court hearing.
“My parents and I want Chris’ children to know that we love them. It has been deeply painful that our honesty and cooperation with law enforcement have led to an intentional effort to separate us from them.
“While this has caused us great pain, we remain hopeful for reconciliation and for the understanding that truth and integrity must guide us. Our cooperation is not an act of division, but one of love—for Chris, his memory, and the justice he deserves.”

John-Paul and Mica Miller: A timeline of events
2015: John-Paul and Mica begin an affair
After first crossing paths when Mica was 13 and attending Solid Rock Church, where John-Paul was a pastor, the pair began an affair when she was 20 and he was 15 years her senior at 35, according to the Netflix doc.
Both were already married at this point – John-Paul had five children with his first wife, Alison Williams, and Mica was married to a fellow member of Solid Rock Church.
2017: John-Paul and Mica marry
After both divorcing their respective spouses, the pair wed each other on 7 November, 2017, when Mica was 23 and John-Paul was 38.
2023: Divorce filing after allegations of control and abuse
Mica first filed for divorce from John-Paul after almost exactly six years of marriage, on 8 October, 2023, according to court documents.
This came after the couple’s relationship dynamic was described by Mica’s family as ‘toxic’, despite John-Paul maintaining that they had a ‘great marriage’ and an ‘amazing’ relationship.
February-March 2024: Divorce filing dismissed and withdrawn
On 13 February, 2024, Mica’s divorce was dismissed. And ten days later, John-Paul filed for separation from Mica, which was subsequently dismissed without prejudice on 12 March, 2024.
April 2024: A final filing for separation
Mica filed for separation for the last time on 15 April, 2024, and a hearing for the separation was scheduled for 5 June. However, just two days after John-Paul was served the separation papers on 27 April, Mica was found dead at the age of 30.
The next day, John-Paul returned to the Solid Rock lectern and gave a sermon, announcing Mica’s death and telling the audience that it was self-inflicted, citing her alleged ongoing mental health struggles.
May 2024: Mica’s death is ruled a suicide
According to a media release from the sheriff’s department, Mica died by suicide. Her cause of death was determined after a review of surveillance footage and an examination by the North Carolina Medical Examiner, as well as interviews.
It later emerged that Mica called 911 to announce that she was going to take her own life, and asked operators to trace her call so her family would be able to find her body.
Summer 2024: Mica’s family make allegations against John-Paul
Her family shared their concerns over her well-being before her death, and alleged that John-Paul was abusive throughout their marriage – claims John-Paul has continuously denied.
November 2024: Solid Rock Church closes
After John-Paul’s sermon addressing Mica’s death was recorded and posted online, where it went viral, her death gained online notoriety, and it is believed this contributed to Solid Rock Church closing its doors for good.
December 2025: John-Paul is indicted on two charges
In the time period leading up to Mica’s death, she reports that the tyres of her car were slashed multiple times, and told officers that she was being followed.
John-Paul denied being involved in this alleged stalking, but in December 2025, the FBI claimed that he had not been telling the truth to officials.
A federal grand jury indicted John-Paul on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to the FBI.
January 2026: John-Paul arraigned in federal court
The case has been continued to October 2026 for a court date.
August 2026: Netflix releases Death of the Pastor’s Wife
The three-part docu-series outlines Mica’s story and features interviews with her family and those close to her.
