Robbie Williams Responds to Olivia Rodrigo’s Christmas Track—But Is There More to the Story?
Ever notice how a single song can throw you straight into a nostalgia vortex, without warning? That’s exactly what’s happening with Olivia Rodrigo’s new Christmas release, “Take Me Home (4 Christmas)”—except, instead of just conjuring up cozy festive feelings, it’s also stirring up a chorus of “Hey, I know that tune!” across the internet . And, oh boy, are people chattering. Some swear they’re hearing echoes of Robbie Williams’ cheeky 2012 banger “Candy,” others are catching whispers of The Waitresses’ classic “Christmas Wrapping,” and a few mavericks are tossing in comparisons to Dexys Midnight Runners and even Kid Rock—talk about a musical fruitcake, bursting with surprise flavors .
Is it simple musical déjà vu, the magic of a catchy pop rhythm striking twice, or has Rodrigo knowingly sprinkled in sonic Easter eggs for our collective amusement? (And did Robbie Williams really just slide into her mentions with a “Happy Christmas” like he’s the ghost of Christmas pop-stars past?) So, pull up a chair—because whether you love a good melody mix-up, or you’re just here for the social media drama, this story promises a festive feast for your ears and eyes .
Listening to Olivia Rodrigo’s new Christmas release, some listeners think they have spotted another big hit that part of it sounds similar to.
Take Me Home (4 Christmas), sees the pop star asking her boyfriend to ‘show some serious commitment’ by bringing her to his parents’ house for the festive period.
The rocky festive track hears hears her singing: “I want you to take me home, and not so we can make out. I want you to take me home. Take me home to your parents’ house.”
But many listeners noticed a similarity to Robbie Williams’ jazzy pop hit Candy, which was released back in 2012.
The Take That star appeared to issue a vague response following the social media discussion, posting simply on X: “Happy Christmas @oliviarodrigo x.”
Rodrigo’s new song may already have sounded familiar though, as fans noticed similarities to The Waitresses’ 1981 festive hit Christmas Wrapping.
However, it seems this was not actually completely unintentional.
Chris Butler, who wrote The Waitresses’ song, has posted a status on Facebook claiming that Rodrigo had contacted him to seek permission for the song.
He said he assumed it was initially a fake email, posting: “About two months ago, I received a weird email from someone claiming to be ‘Olivia Rodrigo’. Said she’d written a Christmas song, and invited me to hear it.”
However after being invited to hear the new track, he praised her ‘phenomenal’ writing and said it’s ‘going to be a smash’.
Rodrigo said the track was written with collaborator Dan Nigro, and Amy Allen, who has previously contributed to songs by the likes of Harry Styles and Sabrina Carpenter.
But fans claimed they thought the song also sounded very similar to Robbie’s hit, from his ninth album Take The Crown.

The upbeat pop-rock track scored the singer a number one hit in the UK.
In a thread on Reddit, one user suggested: “The end part gives Candy, Robbie Williams vibes. Mainly the beat/rhythm that feels similar.”
A post on X meanwhile had a flurry of responses after a user asked: “Why does Olivia Rodrigo’s new Christmas song sound like Candy by Robbie Williams?”.
Another posted: “Yep can’t unhear Robbie Williams candy now,” followed by: “It gives me candy by Robbie Williams vibes.”
Another user comically responded: “Pls tell me I’m not the only one who hears Candy by Robbie Williams? Not hating I love both songs.”
However as is always the case with music because it’s so subjective, listeners also think they heard similarities to other songs too. In the Reddit discussion, it was also likened to Dexys Midnight Runners’ Come on Eileen and All Summer Long by Kid Rock.
