Stella Lefty Breaks Silence: The Surprising Truth Behind Her Path to Groupon+

Ever wondered if having a billionaire dad gives you elite perks, like unlimited cash-back at that vegan tapas place you’ve pretended to enjoy? Staring longingly into the digital middle distance—Stella Lefty, indie singer and proud MTV VMA nominee, admits that life’s “restaurant deals” sometimes arrive courtesy of the genetic lottery (and a little corporate inception). Dive in for the full, eyebrow-raising scoop—and the salty drama that only The Onion can deliver. LEARN MORE.

LOS ANGELES—Responding to scrutiny concerning her tech billionaire father, artist Stella Lefty admitted in an interview Friday that nepotism may have played a role in helping her get Groupon+. “I had to set up the account myself, but yeah, I definitely have to recognize that not all aspiring artists have the privilege of scoring great cash-back offers on select restaurants,” said the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist nominee and “Boston” singer, who swallowed her pride by acknowledging that it was likely she would have never even downloaded the e-commerce company’s app in the first place had her father, Eric Lefkofsky, not co-founded it in 2008. “If I wasn’t born into such a wealthy family, would I have even joined Groupon+? It’s possible. But Groupon’s kind of a scam now, so why would I bother?” At press time, Lefty was facing renewed backlash after it was revealed her father had lifted his idea for Groupon from artist Noah Kahan’s “Savings Season” startup.
