At 95 years old, Jimmy Carter showed up to help build houses with a black eye, a bandage over his eyebrow, and 14 stitches in his face. Just hours earlier, the former U.S. president had fallen at his home in Georgia, only five days after celebrating his 95th birthday.

That same evening, Carter travelled to Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife, Rosalynn, for a Habitat for Humanity event. And the next morning, despite his injuries, he joined volunteers at a construction site, helping assemble wooden supports for new homes.

In 2015, Carter had battled melanoma that spread to his brain. In May 2019, he had broken his hip and undergone surgery. Yet just months later, at 95, he was still showing up to help families get homes.
