A reconstruction shows how Nepal’s devastating flash floods are likely to have occurred.

On Wednesday (26 August), Nepal suffered devastating floods which have killed at least 475 people and left a further 1500 missing. Tourists are believed to be among those missing and dead, which includes 33 British nationals.

It’s currently believed the flood was caused by a glacier in the Himalayan mountains, near the border with Tibet, collapsing into a nearby river, sending a barrage of water and debris crashing through nearby villages and valleys.

A content creator has now shared a visual reconstruction of what likely happened during the disaster.

Shared on Instagram by @sciencebyansh24, the AI-generated clip depicts how the glacial collapse sent a thundering barrage of ice, rock and water sliding down the side of the mountain and towards the nearby Bhotekoshi River.

The debris form a temporary dam in the river, but this is soon breached by melting ice and water, sending a devastating flash flood downriver and into nearby villages.

Images captured of the devastation show villages completely submerged by muddy floodwater, while several bridges in the region have been completely washed away, causing further complications for accessing the region.

It was initially believed that an earthquake had taken place that morning, with the US Geological Survey recording a magnitude of 5.2, however this is now believed to be from the glacial collapse.

Sharing an analysis of the situation, Mike Searle, a professor of earth sciences at Oxford University, told the BBC: “The sheer wave of debris suggests there could have been a landslide first; the water built up, dammed the river, and then it burst in one huge great flood.”

The cause of the glacier collapse is yet to be confirmed, however Searle believes it’s likely to be a combination of climate change and the shifting of tectonic plates.

“The whole thing is combining to form these catastrophic disasters that we are now seeing at a regular basis,” he said.

Searle added that the topography of the region, which features steep mountainous ridges and valleys, likely exacerbated the speed at which the water was able to travel.

“High risk” of second flood occurring in devastated region

China has since warned that there is a ‘high risk’ of a secondary flood occurring in the region, as water is accumulating at a nearby barrier lake.

According to a report from Chinese state television, shared by the BBC, 2.5 million cubic metres of water is currently being held back by a dam of debris in the river.

A further three million cubic metres of water is expected to flow into the river over the next couple of days, meaning there is a very high risk of the dam breaching. Earlier today, it was confirmed that an overflow had occurred at the barrier lake, prompting Chinese rescue operations to be suspended around Gyirong Port, a vital border crossing between China and Nepal.

Meanwhile, Nepali police have also issued a warning about further floods, urging people to move to a safe location.
