In February 2015, Noela Rukundo traveled from Australia to Burundi for her stepmother’s funeral. Her husband, Balenga Kalala, secretly paid almost A$7,000 to have her killed.
The gunmen kidnapped Noela outside her hotel. They called Kalala on speakerphone, and she heard him order them to kill her.
But the men refused because they did not kill women and also knew her brother. They kept the money, held Noela for two days and then released her with recordings and payment receipts proving the plot.
Back in Melbourne, Kalala told people she had died in an accident. As mourners left her funeral, Noela stepped out alive. He reportedly asked whether she was a ghost.
Kalala later pleaded guilty to incitement to murder and received nine years in prison.
